WHEAT GOES UP, CORNHOLDS OWN IN FAIR BUYING

» Severe Cold Wave May

Damage Grain Belt; Liverpool Closed.

CHICAGO, Dec. 27 (U. P)~—A >| severe cold wave over the grain belt threatening damage to winter wheat resulted in fair buying of wheat futures on the Chicago Board of Trade today, and prices worked | © higher. Corn was firm. Wheat was up % to 7% cent, and corn and oats were % to 3% cent

higher. Trading in wheat was only of fair

Tie volume due partly to the holiday I ¥2|at Liverpool where the market will |

be ‘closed until tomorrow. Fears of

,|damage to the unprotected winter

wheat crop in ‘the Southwest prompted scattered buying which was sufficient to push prices up for good gains. The weather map showed subzero temperatures in some sections of the grain belt, and forecast continued cold. Winnipeg wheat ruled firm, gain-

2|ing % to % cent in the first hour.

.|Minneapolis and Kansas City were up % cent each. A holiday at Liverpool was responsible for continued quiet in for eign demand for North American

% wheat. World wheat shipments the

past week were 9,234,000 bushels, of

shipped 3,907,000 bushels. Corn prices ruled firm, partly in sympathy with wheat. Reports of

-|continued hot, dry weather in the

Argentine, threatening the new crop in that country, had a constructive influence. Local receipts were estimated at 75 cars.

AS BANNER YEAR FOR AIR TRAVEL

Expect Stabilization of Industry Under CAA, Airline President Says.

Times Special CHICAGO, Dec. 27 —Pointing toa substantial gain. in air passenger traffic during 1938 despite general business conditions which adversely affected business travel, Pivsiaent W. A. Patterson of United Afr Lines) today forecast substantial increases for 1939 on the basis of several factors expected to influence air transportation favorably. Airlines expect stabilization of the industry ‘will be aided by the provisions " of the ‘Civil ‘Aeronautics Authority of 1938, and 1939 will be the first full year of administration of the Act by the CAA, Mr. Pai-| terson said. Establishment of equitable air mail rates now under consideration by the Authority are essential, and the Authority under the new law is empowered to determine and grant rates for carrying the air mail which are fair and reasonable. “The year 1939 looks substantially brighter in prospect than the year 1938)” Mr, Patterson said. “Any further improvement in industry will be reflected in increased air traffic. Naturally the two fairs, at New York and San Francisco, will be of material assistance.

which must be dealt with during the coming year, including equipment. Introduction of four-engined airplanes in actual seryice will probably not be accomplished during 1939. An intensification of the program of public education is needed. It is also important evidence of the constructive intention of the airlines to act together in their common merchandising problems. »

“Back from its week’s holiday vacation, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will resume its CBSWFBM series of weekly broadcasts

Lest our yuletide mood vanish too quickly, Conductor Fabien Sevitzky has selected a program preponderantly | “Christmasy.” Of the three scheduled compositions, two are of] a seasonal nature. They are Philip James’ Overture in Olden Style on French Noels, and Tschaikowsky’s {“Nuicraker” Suite, the familiar selections from his music for ‘a Christmas Eve ballet. The other programmed number is the “Unfinished’ Symphony of Schubert.’ You probably have noticed before now that Mr. Sevitzky includes American music on each of his broadcasts, as well as on the programs for home consumption. Thi: week's native son, Mr. James, is well | known organist and choral conductor, and professor of music a New York University. His best known works are th “Bret Harte” Overture, which th New | York Philharmonic-Symphon has played, and his suite, “Statio WG2BX.” This latter won the NB orchestral award in 1932—rathe ironically, too, since it is a sthel broad satire on radio’s program ma

Incidentally, the fod) orchestra seems to be reaching a far-flung audience, as witness a “fan letter” which Mr. Sevitzky received recently trom a listener in Central America.

| 2 ” [4 | WIRE also is getting into distant fields with its new transmitter. A, recent after-hours “DX” broadcast (which is for fans who sit up all hours. of the night trying for faraway stations) brought letters from 22 states and the District of Columbia, and from two Canadian provinces. 2 2 =» Three popular entertainers are going visiting tonight. Fred Allen has agreed to appear on the “Men Only” program (7:30 p. m., NBC= WIRE) to heckle the assembled ex-

perts engaged for some 1939 fores casts. : The year’s business forecast will be by Dr. George W. Gallup, whose National Institute of Public Opinion polls appear in The, Times. John Gunther, author of | | “Inside Europe,” will look into the future of foreign affairs. Abel Green, editor of that theatrical Bible, Vari-

|| ety, will predict trends in the amuse-;

ment field, and a sports expert, as yet unnamed, probably will. forecasts another American League pennant. for the Yankees. And Fred will: disagree with all of them. At 9 p. m., on the same network, Lum and Abner will bring their cracker-barrel Philosophy to the

terial.
