BAR INTERVENES "IN HAGUE CASE

Becomes ‘Friend of Court’ "To Aid Struggle for “Assembly Rights..

PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 23 (U. P.). ~The American Bar Association infervened as a “friend of the court” today in the “bill! of rights” legal . battle between Mayor Frank Hague of Jersey City, N. J., and the C. I. O. ‘and the American Civil Liberties 3 Union. The U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals was to hear arguments today ‘on the appeal by Mayor Hague and Jersey City officials from an injunction issued by Federal Judge Wil- ~ liam Clark, Nov. 7 which ordered ~ them to accord free speech rights ~~ to the C. I. O. and other organiza- - tions. The bar association’s “special committee on the bill of rights” ~ filed a 38-page brief with the Circuit Court late yesterday in which it supported the “freedom of assembly” injunction. It was signed by eight’ prominent attorneys, including a former partner of Elihu Root, ~ a Harvard Law School professor, the general cousel for the Eearst newspapers and the general counsel of the A. F. of L. “The committee believes the conduet of officials of Jersey City in denying the right of assembly constitutes a serious abridgement of the constitutional right “peaceably to assemble” of so deliberate and important a character as to be of na- + tional consequences,” the brief read. “The committee has no interest in this litigation save as its outcome will affect the integrity of the fun‘damental rights that are here in question and particularly the right of assembly.”

Trimmed Christmas

Tree Flies

A woman stepped up to the parcel post window st the Post Office today with a pine-cone-shaped crate about the: size of a small child. “I want to send this parcel post air-mail, ” she said to the clerk. The clerk reached for a ruler. Postal regulations state that packages must be under 100 inches, length and girth combined. .« . The package was two inches under the limit. “I'm dfraid that'll cost a lot of money,” he told the woman. “I'll pay anything up to . $10,” she said. The clerk weighed the crate. “That’ll be $9.50,” he told her. She handed him the money. “By the way,” he asked, “what is in the crate?” “A complete trimmed Christmas tree,” she answered.
