DAY, DEC. 22, Add Puzzles: \ Sri Likes “N. Y. Yankees
™ liams Unable to Explain
Sudden Turn by ‘His Friend.
| By JOE WILLIAMS
I let Times Special Writer
| NEW YORK, Dec. 22.—We are | disturbed at the printed utterance | credited to Mr. Clark Griffith that | the Yankees seem good enough to | repeat in the American League race | next year. This just doesn’t sound | ee the old gentleman. ‘For the last three years Mr. Grif- | | fith has lifted a set of rebellious | tonsils against all who timidly sug- | gested that the Yankees seemed to | represent z very definite threat. iTo learn now that the owner of | the Washingtons has become a con- | formist—and at his age—is |more | than mildly puzzling.
‘We have always gpt a certain pe-
| culiar delight in sith ng around with’
Mr. Griffith in the spring and listening to him forecast the most dis- ' mal sort of season for the Yankees.
| Lazzeri Termed Key Man
| 3 ‘We remember being with him two years ago in Orlando, Pla., and he cautioned us against picking them to ‘win the pennant. “The most valuable man on the team is Tony Lazzeri,” he said, “and if anything should - happen to him the team would collapse.”
Nothing happened, to Lazzeri ‘that year and the Yankees won their second straight championship. A year ago we sat with Mr Griffith at Lakeland, Fla. By now Lazzeri was no longer a member of the Yankees. | “Remember what I told you about Lazzeri last spring?” he said. “Well watch the Yankees this year. They'll be lucky to finish third.”
One of Williams’ Favorites
* «This is not written with the idea of kidding Mr. Griffith. He is one of our favorites. In view of the circumstances all we can say is that he is not a very expert prophet— and if background, experience and native intelligence mean anything he should be a most expert prophet. The demonstrated fact that he isn’t is heartening to us. Once in a while, perhaps we should say once in a very great while, we do not always call the turn correctly ourself, and in no sport do we have the background, experience, etc. that Mr. Griffith is blessed with. Even so, it is surprising to us that Mr. Griffith could underrate the Yankees so badly. The Yankees didn’t miss Lazzari at all last year. Indeed, one of the things that helped the Yankees win their third straight championship was the fact that Lazzeri wasn't in the lineup.
Gordon Helped Crosetti
Few people realized it at the time but Lazzeri was a handicap to the team. He had slowed down, which made the second base sector vulnerable; but worse than that, in slow_ing down, he had impaired the play of Frank Crosetti at shortstop. Along came the youngster, Joe Gordon, to play second base as well - if not better than Lazzeri had ‘ever played it. And in coming along he brought Crosetti back to his old form. | It is| quite evident Mr. Griffith overrated Lazzeri’s importance to the Yankees. And it is equally possible that he underrated the potential ability of young Gordon, We would not know for sure. But-what we do know is that in the past Mr. Griffith never liked the Yankees. Even when they were good. And- now to hear that he practically concedes them the flag—well, it makes you feel that
nothing is safe or secure in this troubled world anymore.

‘Marott Shoe oe Quinist. Takes Team Honors With 3294 Series.
A dazzling 737 placed Don Johnson at the head of today’s Shooting Stars. The Barbasol pinman bowled games of 236, 246 and a strong final of 255 last night at Pritchett’s drives. But team honors for the evening went to the Indianapolis League’s Marott Shoe quintet who posted a powerful 3294 series with games of 1197, 979 and 1118. the Shooting Star list easily. Fred Mounts had 613; Paul Stemm, 632; Dick Nordholt, 684; Oscar Behrens, 675, and Harry Wheeler, 640. Of the 39 included in those rolling 600s or better, 28 gathered their lumber in the Indianapolis League. Seven of the 12 quintets tallied 3000 or better and the lowest was a 2759. In the Roberson Coal Ladies League at the Fox-Hunt zlleys, Tillie Kagel scattered the maples for a 579 with games of 169, 210 and 200. Fehr scored 568, PF. Snyder, 551; R. Johns, 544, and Eva Dawson, 529.

Seventh of a Series
By DON BEATTY World All-Events Champion I look at the pins from the start of the approach until just as I am about to release the ball, when | I switch my eyes to the spot where! I am to play the ball at the foul|g line. On certain alleys the spot remains the same when I am seeking strikes. Naturally, the spot changes with the alley. On a drive on which the ball hooks quite a little you move irom the corner of the alley toward the middle. On stiff alleys. or those which | do not readily lend themselves to a hook you move toward the cor-|c¢ ner of the drive and point the ball Lk more toward the head pin. S

One of the secrets of successful
bowling is learning to play differ-
work. Keep back of the foul line in § practice and you will bowl better § in league and tournament games. ! Always keep in mind the timing § of your swing of the ball and the § number of steps you take, as the fi delivery, including the swinging of the ball and your stridé, must be § in perfect rhythm at all times for i best results. The majority develop superior it footwork through the use of rub- § per heels. Some use all rubber § soles, while others prefer shoes § without rubber. For right-handed bowlers, the left shoe should have a buck sole, the opposite for left- § handers. | Use bowling shoes at all times, the use of rubber being optional.

following practice Saturday. The Rockets are scheduled to play the Plainfield Quakers Jan. 6 and
Brownsburg Jan. 7. Broad Ripple’s|
basketball team has won two and dropped three games. The team has been drilling on. sn offense that it hopes will prove eftective against the zone defense used by Brownsburg.
Trojan Gridders Stop Duke Plays
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 22 (U. P.).— Two developments caused joy at Southern California University today: At long last, the football Trojans had Duke University’s offensive plays and, as executed by U. S. C. shock troops, they could stop them. After two weeks of offensive practice, Coach Howard Jones broke out a set-of Duke plays and had his
third and fourth teams run them.
The Trojans first line stopped them with ease. Presumably Jones took
the plays from slow motion pictures
of Duke games.
