By LEO DAUGHERTY Times Staff Writer FRANKLIN, Dec. 21.—Mr. Fuzzy Vandivier sat on a bleacher pine in the high school gymnasium and flatly denied that he was Indiana's greatest basketball player or even one of its greatest the last two decades. The Fuzzy One thereby contradicted the fellow who fuels the base burner at the bus station, the gents who warm their feet and ears thereabouts and most of the popuation as well. “Who says about me being a basketball player?” asked the Fuzz. “Got a -cigaret? I'll tell you who was the best basketball player this state ever saw. He’s Johnny Wooden

Eddie Riska, Ed Sadowski, and Paul Du‘€harme nave scored enough points win average games, but neither ; ark Ertel nor Rex Ellis have shown the form at center that €oach Keogan believes that they will exhibit: in future games. Ertel las rk no points and Ellis has Rade ohe free throw in the last o starts. And neither has been effective as last year on defense. i The failure of Gene Klier, junior ward, to hit last season's stride as beer: another source of surprise. apt. Earl Brown is not in tip-top ape yet, having .joined the team gn Dec. 8 after thc conclusion of football season. Larry Ryan, promising Chicago sophomore, isn’t able play more than 10 minutes at a me kecause of weak arches. » Beogan has moved DuCharme from forward te guard at least tempo- : sarily tp bolster ihe latter position.

from Martinsville and Purdue. He was clever, a good dribbler, a good passer, a goot shot. He had what it takes.” Mr. Vandivier, who earned his chevrons at the high school where he coaches and then went on to pile up medals at a member of the late Griz Wagner's Franklin College “Wonder Five” of the early twenties, puffed through the question of whether or not the current game is faster than when he played. “There isn’t as much fast break now as there used to be,” jhe argued as he tipped his fedora and knitted his . eyebrows. “They're not fast breaking now like we used to do a fast break. Most of the teams are coming down slowly and putting up formations after the defense has set. “To me, the fast break is to get down there ahead of the defense. Keep three out and two in there to shoot. Listen, when 1 was playing and they, I mean the other team, missed, we broke fast and every team we played did that way too. “Certainly, there isn’t the rest period now after a foul or a field goal for the tipoff, but as far as the

Take It From Fuzzy Vandivier, Today's Fast Break Can’t Equal Yesteryear’s
What's become of that great team? well, Fuzzy is here. Harry King Bosse. Wendell Ballard is producing a winner at Shelbyville. Johnny Gant is living here and officiating. I played for eight years, under Griz Wagner. I knew him. I'll never equal him, neither will anyone else. They say ‘Doc’ Meanwell did, but he didn't develop the short pass. Griz Wagner did and he developed the fast break around here. Griz was away ahead of his time in this
