side” and the airlock designed to reduce gradually the pressure on his body. py Two attempts to release him from his self-inflicted imprisonment were frustrated by stomach cramps and crawling sensations around the

ees. He left the airlock for the last time shortly before 3 p. m. yesterday and after a preliminary examination his collaborator in the tests, Dr. Edgar End, 28, of Marquette University Medical School, announced he believed there would be no ill effects. Dr. End said he would be watched

said the “crawling sensation” of which Mr. Nohl had complained was known as “bugs” or “sandhog itch” and, like the “bends,” was another type of compressed air illness. The sensation came, he said, from minute air bubbles just under the skin.

Both men said they believed their tests would bring some changes in the theory of the human body's reaction to prolonged pressure. Mr. Nohl said he felt no illeffects from the experiment but that the pain earlier had been ‘“excruciating.” : Dr. End said the few slight pains

remaining probably would disappear

after a good night's rest. Dr. End himself spent 11 hours in the pressure tank before coming out. Mr. Nohl, who last year set an unofficial world diving record of 420 feet in Lake Michigan, said they had hoped, among other things, to find a quicker way to bring divers back to normal atmospheric conditions after working in the depths. From three to four hours normally is required to adopt the body to normal pressure from a 44-pound pressure. ‘Any attempt to hasten the process is apt to result in the “bends.”

the terror of divers because it may maim or even Kill. It results from separation of nitrogen bubbles in the blood stream. The experimenters said complete results of their tests would not be known until they had had an op-

oughly. The tank was designed for use in treating victims of the disease. It is cylindrical, seven feet in diameter and 17 feet long, and contains two compartments—a main chamber in which the experiment was conducted and a smaller “exit” cham-

mained for approximately three hours when emerging, while pressure on their bodies was reduced to normal. : They entered the tank dressed only in shorts and equipped with oxygen resuscitation tanks, equipment for the blood tests, food and water. After the pressure had been raised Dr. End took samples of Mr. Nohl’s blood for chemical tests to ‘determine the effect of the pressure of the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. He repeated the tests at intervals until about 7 p. m.
