MMURRAY ASKS FREE TEXT BOOK OR RENTAL PLAN

Urges Parents to Bring First Pressure on Heads of Schools.

Floyd I. McMurray, State superintendant of public instruction, today urged adoption of a free textbook plan or gz rental system for local school units. A rental system now inh use in some Indianapolis grade schools costs each pupil an average of 77 cents per year, Mr. McMurray said. “Parents should take the initiative ‘and bring pressure upon their local school officials to get rental or free textbooks,” he said. The two courses of action are available under Indiana law, he pointed out.

Defends School Board

A free texthgok system requires a petition and election, he said. Under this system school text costs are included in the regular school budget and the school children use them free. Property tax and | other sources for school revenue are used to pay for the texts. Only action iby Hie school board is necessary to inaugurate a rental system, he said. Under this system, texts are bought by the school corporation and rented to the children at a nominal sum, he said. Mr. McMurray defended action of : the school board which recently announced that new textbooks adopted for all grades except the eighth ~ grade would be 5 to 28 cents higher. Only two of the texts now used in the schools were readopted. “The increase in price is in line with the general price trend,” he said, “and the texts which were not readopted hac been in use at least 10 years” | | 2
