To Get Dose of Own Medicine
Carnegie’s Tartans Hope to Supplement Running With Passes.
—_——
By BERNARD J. NILLES United Press Siaff Correspondent PITTSBURGH, Dec. 21.—Carnegie Tech hopes to give Texas Christian ‘a dose of its own medicine—forward passing—when the two teams meet in the New Orleans Sugar Bowl football game, In all the talk about Davey O’Brien, Texas Christian’s demon
passer, the ability of Tech to throw|
the ball has beer largely overlooked. The Tartans have a strong running attack, but their passing game is even more effective. Tech players don’t throw many passes, but when they take to tne | air ‘they really strike out for pey dirt. The running aftack is built around Halfbacks George Muha, strapping sophomore, and Merlyn Condit, junior. Muha is the more powerful runner of the two, but Condit is trickier once he gels into the open. Ray Carnelly, quarterback, directs the team, runs interference, punts, kicks for the extra point after touchdown and passes. He throws long passes and Condit, who can throw ‘em long or short, helps him.
. Lee May, Start
Jack Lee, 200- -pound fullback, has been out ‘of aciion since the Pitt game when he disldcated a cartilage in one knee. He may be able to start against Texas Christian, but if he is not, Tony; Laposki, ‘who weighs only 171, will take his place. Coach Bill Kern, who learned football under Jock Sutherland of Pitt, goes in for 3 more open offense than Pitt uses. He never hesitates to garable for a touchdown. On offense he uses an unbalanced line with a single wing most of the tirne, but occasionally the team drops into a double wing formation. Kern’s chief worry, of course, is to stop O'Brien's passes, and he hopes to be able {fo do it early in the game. While not giving away any secrets, he indicated he would try to do it by having his ends and tackles smash’ into the T. C. U. backfield instead of dropping back
Lawson Robertson, Olympic coach, demonstrates a device to prevent false starts. John Magee, former Olympic coach, is on the mark; Avery Brundage, looking on. A pad is electrically connected to the gun. If the runner jumps the gun, contact is broken, preventing the gun's being fired. Demonstration was made in Washington.

Shortridge Begins Practice for Tech
The Shortridge varsity basketball squad was to begin practice sessions this afternoon for the clash with Tech a week from tonight at Tech. The Blue and White have been idle since their twin bill last week-end in which they lost 32-31 to Shelbyvile and then downed Southport 32-21. The squad is now at full strength,
Dick Gage, guard, returning after a two weeks’ illness. Gage's specialty of long shots has been missed in the last three encounters and is expected to cause the Green quintet considerable trouble. On Dec. 30, two nights after the Tech game, Shortridge will play Central of Evansville there, Athletic Director Russel Julius said that only the varsity team would be taken on the trip and the reserves would not play that night.

The Law!
Boxer Slugs Referee And Learns He's a Policeman.
OME, Italy, Dec. 21 (U. P). —Boxing fans who always beef at the referee had a hero today—fighter Luigi Celli who knocked one out. : At the end of his match with Otello Romoni, Celli’ watched, scowling, as Refereee Alberto Galletti walked over and raised Romoni’s hand in token of victory. Then Celli rushed up, shoved Romoni aside and pasted a terrific right uppercut on Galletii’'s jaw. He took the fuli count but when he woke up he had the last laugh. As Celli clambered from the ring, Galletti grabbed his arn. “You're under arrest,” he said. Celli unfortunately had forgontten a recent government decree which- gave police powers to all sports. officials.
Cage Player Knocked Unconscious in Tilt
Police today suspected “foul play” in the alleged slugging last night of Horace Beaman, 21, of 1006 Ingomar Ave., as he was shooting a foul during a basketball game at the Hoosier A. C. between the Kingan & Co. team and a quintet representing the Rockwood Paper and Pulley Co. Mr. Beaman of the Kingan team was standing on the foul line, police said, when someone punched him so hard that he was knocked unconscious. He was taken to Methodist Hospital and remained there today for observation.
