oncert By Jordanites Wins Praise
ny Leads Students In Their First Public
Appearan; ce.
i By JAMES TaRasHER G No gentleman would undertake ~ to look upon a Christmas gift : eitically any more than he would ~ look a gift horse in the mouth. And since the Jordan Conservatory of © Music had advertised | its concert ~ last night in the Scottish Rite ~ Cathedral as a Christmas present to the community, it Highs seem that there is no point in writing any-
| thing about it.
Yet, for those who did hot ac- ~ éept the school’s general invitation, ~ a“word about the Conservatory Or- ~ c¢hestra might be appropriate. It was the group’s first public appearance ~ since Fabien Sevitzky undertook its "direction ‘a year agbd last fall. Apparently Mr. Sevitzky hasn't overlooked the fact that the student of ~ today is the symphonic citizen of ~ fomorrow, for he is giving them a d musical upbringing. i
"As Though He Led His Own
Mr. Sevitzky directed the young ~ players with the same cadre and earnestness which he brings to work with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. There was no evidence of diffidence or apology. nor any sign © that he felt last night’s efforts to be ~ peneath his dignity cr unworthy of his talents. He greeted the audi- '. ence with cordiality, but approached ge music with sincerity. | ; t was altogether a delightful ocoy There was a brilliant and well-wrought Overture on French Noels by Philip James, a Haydn Pi"ano Concerto (D Major, Opus 21), with Tommie Wright as soloist and Tschaikowsky’s “Nutcracker” Suite. ‘The combined Conservatory-Butler University choirs then sang a Russian carol by Rimsky-Korsakov and, finally, the evening was rounded out in a traditional and hearty manner by Handel's “Hallelujah” Chorus. - In case it had slipped your mind, it: might be well to mention the fact that the Tschaikowsky music is. perfectly appropriate to, the sea- ' son. For the ballet for which the music was written has a Christmas Eve setting.
Played With Delicacy | |
A little girl, just like many little gitls of today, is much more taken with an ordinary rutcracker than with any of her expensive the course of the evening, breaks the nutcracker and, * the guests have gone, ret mourn over the fascinating instrument. «It is then that the toys and sweetmeats come to life, and do the dances for which Tschaikowsky wrote some of his unaccustomed light-hearted music. i #The orchestra (with a generous sprinkling of symphony players who are also faculty members) | played the music with delicacy and charm. And they also gave a splendid acen. of the concerto gccompanien ! Young Mr. Wright's playing had ace and fluency, snd his poise and emeanor were of the mature perrmer rather than the pupil. The oncerto is more in the realm of amber ‘music than of virtuosity, 8nd both soloist and conductor kept well within the bounds of lk taste. orks
