Council Trend Is Catise For' Optimism.

A continued upswing of business in 1939, is the ' prediction of Dr. George W. Starr, director . of the Bureau of Business Research of the Indiana University School of Business Administration, Dr. Starr based his prediction on what he called present trend foward an amicable adjustment | between capital, labor and government. He spoke last night at the meeting of the Indianapolis Sales Executive Council in the Columbia Club. Coming congressional legislation

- | to release credit and to adjust dif-

ferences between labor and capital and between government and business; will aid in the upturn, Dr. Starr said. He warned however,

would bring a threat of a later depression. He urged

that governmental

| “pump-priming” and public works | programs he “tapered off as soon as i. | possible,

with. private’ business taking up the slack, so that we can

make ‘some advancement in cutting

public expense and toward a bal-

" |anced budget.”

He also forecast an improvement in farming conditions despite curtailment of the export nariket. C. D. Alexander, ‘president of the Indianapolis Chamber of Cc mmerce, who also spoke, asked co-operation of the Indianapolis Sales Executive Council with the chamber. Edward Zink, president of the council and sales manager of Eli Lilly & Co., presided. The speaker was introduced by Robert M. Bowes, president of the Bowes Seal Fast Corp. Paul O. Ferrei, council vice president, spoke briefly.
