‘Union Pacific Railroad between ‘Chicago and the West Coast, it will be capable of whisging a train of 15 standard Pullman cars at speeds up to 125 miles an hour. Engineers claim the locomotive will do twice e work of the conventional ene for each pound of fuel and ake three! times the mileage withIt stops for either fuel or water. Headed by Owen I. to the make electricity just as is done in any public utility plant. The elec-

erful motors geared to the wheels. Little Water Needed ,

In warm weather when the steamcar heating plant is not needed, the locomotive can travel from coast to coast without a single drop of water. This is possible because the steam from the boiler after driving the turbine is condensed back into water and used over again instead. of : escap through the smokestack as in the conventional engine. The two units making up the complete two-cab locomotives ‘are each 90 feet long and weigh about 265 tons. The 5000 horsepower will enable the Union Pacific to handle its heaviest standard train equipment over the entire run from Chicago to the West Coast without a change of locomotives and without. requiring a helper over the grades, engineers declare. With the introduction of completely automatic operation of the steam boiler equipment, the engineer has only to demand more POwWer and speed in the cab to increase the flow of fuel—a low cost petroleum known as “bunker” oil—to the boiler. The pressure can be raised from zero to full steam pressure within a few minutes. The boiler uses forced circulation of 'the water through the tubes surrounding the furnace, and 45,000 pounds of steam is generated an hour to a pressure of 1500 pounds at a temperature of 950 degrees. The mechanical and electrical parts of the locgniotive were manufactured in the Erie plant of the General Electric Co. ’
