severe cold weather in Europe. Pressure of southern hemisphere wheat was said to be light. North American wheat export business was unimportant. Winnipeg wheat prices reflected outside markets, advancing % to % cent in the first hour. ; The weather map indicated little improvement in the continued dry weather in the Southwest. The forecast predicted unsettled weather in some dry areas. Corn prices firmed on export sales reported around 400,000 bushels and strength at Buenos Aires. The better tone in wheat also attracted buying in corn. After an initial advance of as much as 1 cent prices settled back somewhat on increased pressure.

INDEX DISCLOSES RETAIL PRICES DIP

NEW YORK, Dee, 19 (U. P).—

.| Retail prices turned downward this

month after remaining unchanged for three conseciitive months, according to the Fairchild Publication’s retail price index. The index on Dec. 1 stood at 88.0 per cent (Jan. 3, 1931, equals 100), compared with 89 per cent for the evius month, and 94.5 per cent for e. 1, 1937.

Current prices, according to the

latest index, are 5.9 per cent below

a year ago, and 8.6 per cent below the 1937 high, but are 1.1 per cent above the 1936 low and 28.1 per cent above the 1933 low. “The nominal decline in the index was due largely to easing in home furtiishings and women’s apparel,” it wis stated.
