| Depressed English Market

Also Causes Selling; Corn Down.

CHICAGO, Dec. 17 (U, P.).—An Argentine Government forecast of the second largest wheat crop on record depressed wheat prices on the Board of Trade today. - At the close wheat was off % to 3% cent, December 63%; corn was off % cent, December 49%, and oats were 1% to 3% cent lower, December 27% cents, The estimate placed the prospective Argentine crop at 316 million

:| bushels, considerably ‘above recent

private predictions. The lower English market influenced scattered selling in the local wheat pit, and while pressure was not great, the buying side lacked any incentive. Lack of export business in North American wheat was a bearish factor., Corn prices also developed an easier undertone in a slow trade, influenced to some degree by wheat.

"GOOD MUSIC! By James Thrasher

Charles Haubiel will conduct his New York Philharmonic-Symphony Society prize composition in its first performance on the Philharmonic’s broadcast at 2 p. m..tomorrow, CBSWFBM. It is a Passacaglia in A

Minor subtitled “The Plane Beon ”» Mr, Haubiel shared first prize in the society’s American Composers Contest with Robert L. Sanders who, as far as I can discover, is the same

University school of music. Tomorrow’s composer-conductor was for eight years a piano teacher at the New York Institute of Musical Art, and has been teaching composition and theory at New York University for the last 15 years.! ” John Barbirollh will conduct the remainder of tomorrow’s broadcast > concert. The program includes the|®

with Hortense Monath as soloist, and the Franck Symphony.

” os » The Detroit Symphony Orchestra

with Fritz Reiner replacing Jose

Iturbi, who had held the baton since the season’s start. And the broadcast (8 p. m, CBS-WFBM) also marks the welcome return to the air of Myra Hess, the distinguished British pianist. Miss Hess, tormedy a frequent visitor here on the Maennerchor series, seems to be back in the swing

_ Though the publicity does not say

Iso, it seems safe to say that the /|performance of Paul Hindemith’s

“Mathis der Mahler” Symphony by

Artur Rodzinski and the NBC Symphony tonight will be the work's first American broadcast. The “symphony,” so designated by the composer, is an orchestral synethesis of an opera of the same name, These excerpts first were played in Berlin in 1934, but the opera itself was not produced until last summer, in Zurich. Opera and symphony are based on the life of Matthias Grus enewald, a 16th Century painter. © Dr. Rodzinski also will conduct the “Euryanthe” Overture of Weber, Dvorak’s Symphony No. 4 (not the “New World”!) and Strauss’. “Till Eulenspiegel” (9 p. m:, NBC-WIRE), | o s s Having completed its Beethoven cycle, the New Friends of Music concert| series turns tomorrow to the chamber music of Bach and Haydn, Tomorrow's broadcast (5 p. m., NB€« Blue), will bring you the Haydn Quiriets Opus 77 and Opus 33 No, layed by thte Budapest Quartet, and Bach’s Fifth Sonata for Violin Piano, played by Norman Toten berg and Helen Vogel. | 2 o ” John Charles Thomas’ appearance will be the musical highlight on toe morrow’s “Magic Key” hour. .-. Erno Rapee, the ardent Sibelius champion, will conduct the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra in the Finnish master’s Fifth Symphony. Mr, Rapee says this rather formidable work is the most frequentlty requested of the composer’s seven pub= lished symphonies, all of which the conductor brought forth last year. Music by Smetana and Schubert, and two arias sung by Robert Weede,

again after her illness of a couple .
