One. prisoner convicted in Marion County had. his sentence commuted and another had his parole petition denied by the State Clemency Commission, which toaay reviewed
‘ the cases of 18 Indiana Reformatory inmates. : Archie Pope, sentenced here April 4, 1935, to 10 to 25 years for robbery, was granted a commutation to five to 25 years with the understanding that he serve at least five years. Trial records showed that Pope formerly had been an auto salesman in Fortville and Lawrence. After his commissions dwindled, trial records showed, he participated in a series of robberies in Indianapolis. Walter McLaughlin, also convict- | ed in the Marion County Criminal ~ 4 Court, had his petition denied. He 3 was sentenced March 18, 1935, to . 10 to 25 years for robbery. The Commission said he participated in robberies in. Richmond, Knightstown, Anderson and Indianapolis.

In granting the parole, the Commission said he would have to return to California and make reports for a year. > Others paroled were: Verl Townsend, sentenced March 2, 1937, in Randalph County Circuit Court to two to 14 years for forgery; Malcolm Kinney, sentenced July 12, 1937, to two to 14 years in Fayette County Circuit Court for uttering a false instrument; Anthony Ernst, sentenced March 17, 1938, to one to 10 years in Harrison County Circuit Court for grand larceny; and Keith Carpenter, Carl Kopp and Charles Mik | ler, co-defendants with Ernst, wh received the same sentences. The last four named were convicted of having stolen scrap iron from an abandoned canning factory in Corydon.

State Employment Service Report Shows 680 of jobs Permanent.
Indianapelis employers hired 1008 persons during November through the State Employment Service's local office, George J. Smith, district manager, announced today. Of that number, 393 men and 287 ‘women filled jobs designated as perrary jobs absorbed 187 men and 141 women, it was reported. re i Those receiving permanent jobs
included 170 laborers, 100 workers |
engaged in factory Work, 87 in the service field and 36 in commerce and professions. Women filled 156 permanent jobs in the service and domestic field, 56 jobs in factories and 75 commercial and professional jobs. Temporary jobs were distributed between men and women as follows: 55 men and 73 women in service and domestic jobs; 43 men and 6 women in skilled and semi-skilled jobs, seven men and 62 women in office jobs and 82 men who filled miscellaneous labor jobs. :
