The tempo of pre-Christmas festivities in Indianapolis was in-

announced that, although no formal observance would be held by the management, employees would follow their usual custom of holding spontaneous celebrations throughout the store. Chiief of these, he said, will be th rendition of Christmas carols from the first floor balcony by the Ayres Christmas Carolers, a choir of 38 women organized 17 years ago. The choir will sing from 4 to 4:30 p.. m. daily, beginning Monday and lasting ‘through Saturday. The L. S. Ayres & Co. Colored Glee Club, an organization of 10 singers, will stroll through: the streets Christmas eve singing Mristmas. carols. The glee club, orized by the employees themselves, is under the direction of! Clifford Long, a nonemployee.

Miss Ruth Noller, organist, will give two half-hour recitals of Christmas music each day beginning today and continuing through Saturday on the company orgatron in the store’s sixth floor auditorium. Twenty-seven cities operating no utilities have the highest average rate, with the exception of Indianapolis, of $1.1496. Indianapolis’ civil city rate in effect this year is $1.25. Cities owning an electric power utility tend toward lower tax rates than those owning only a water or only a gas utility.
