‘HOT’ SWING MUSIC NO HELP IN WORK

By Science Service STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Dec. 15.— Swing music, the slow and harmonious kind, is a help in doing factory work. “Hot” and noisy swing music isn’t. "This is the verdict from an ex-

periment in a Pennsylvania factory, in which Dr. John F. Humes, Pennsylvania State College psychologist, tried the effect of different types

~0f music on factory employees. The

work helped by tuneful Music was a a requiring hand and finger dexrity.

PREDICT DECREASE IN GRASSHOPPERS

By Science Service WASHINGTON, Dec. 15.—Grasshoppers will not be as troublesome next year as they were during the past season, scientists of the U. S. Department of Agriculture predicted after an annual grasshopper-egg {survey in the grain and range areas of the country. Effectiveness of this year’s poisonbait warfare against the pests is credited with reducing the egg crop. A slow, cool spring, which caused last spring’s ‘hoppers to emerge in relays instead of nearly all at once, increased the difficulties of the antigrasshopper campaign, they said.

When the commission began functioning last year, it set a goal of 50 new ships annually for the next 10 years to rejuvenate a merchant marine made up largely of slow, obsolete vessels. It was successful this year in putting on the ways or letting construction contracts for 50 modern cargo and passenger carriers. Early in 1939, the commission in-

posed new liners, which will operate from Pacific Coast ports, probably will be invited within the next two|o months, according to a commission

‘construction next year of from one to three new passenger and express freight liners of the so-called “Ambassador” type for use in the South American East Coast trade where American operators face severe competition from foreign carriers. These ships would be built under the supervision of the Navy and be made convertible into aircraft carriers in the event of war. Plans for these ships are in a tentative state but the blueprints and specifications for the West Coast liners are in a more advanced stage. It was understood that the Pacific vessels will have accommodations for approximately 1000 passengers each and will have every conceivable safety device. A commission official said no decision has yet been made as to the exact trans-Pacific service in which the proposed liners will be placed. The commission also will decide later whether it will operate the

ships itself, charter or sell them.

Meanwhile, it was reliably re-

ported here that the United States Lines was considering building next year two or three new passenger liners of the “America” type now| under construction. which - would approximate 35,000 tons, w lantic service.
