Beven was born in a house owned by the Illinois Central Railroad and rented by his father, William, an engineer on the run bétween ‘McComb and New Orleans. The son went to work in New Orleans at the age of 12. He held such positions as clerk, trainmaster, general superintendent, -assistant to the president and vice president while becoming the second man in Illinois : Central history: to rise through the ranks to the presidency.
