session on the Board of Trade today, despite weakness in outside markets. Wheat was unchanged to up % cent, and corn and oats were unchanged to 1% cent lower. General, interest in wheat was at a. low ebb. Unfavorable reports from the Southwest indicating further deterioration of winter wheat in large sections had a constructive influence, but no active buying developed. The weather map showed clear weather in all sections except the Oklahoma and Texas panhandle, and the foreeast was for, fair and warmer. Liverpool wheat closed % to 7% cent lower on absence of demand for actual wheat and fear of pressure from the Argentine and Australia. Winnipeg lost % to % cent in the first hour. Export business in North American wheat was confined to about 200,000 bushels of Manitobas worked from the Pacific Coast. Corn prices stayed close to previous closing levels in a slow trade. Scattered selling at the opening in-

port was uncovered: at fractionally lower levels. No export business was reported. Buenos Aires corn ‘was firm. Local grain receipts included an estimated 106 cars of corn and 18

JOURNAL SAYS

High Schedules Persist in Most Districts; Heavy Buying Seen.

CLEVELAND, Dec. 14 (U. P.).— Steel production is offering strong resistance to the quieting influence of the approaching year-end and renewed buying is expected with the turn of the year, according to the magazine Steel. With sehedules in most districts unchanged from last week, the national steelmaking rate held at 61 per cent. In the corresponding 1937 period the rate was only 26 per cent. In a more than seasonal expansion, production of steel ingots during November scored. the largest gain over October in-the history of the industry, the magazine said. Total production for the month was placed at 3,572,220 tons, a gain of 14.6 per cent over the October total] of 3,117,934 tons, and 65.7 per cent:

November, 1937: “Except for 1936, November production ‘was the largest for the month since 1928, partly a reflec91tion of the fall introduction of new automobile -models,” Steel added. “Renewed buying of finished steel confidentially ‘is ‘expected with the turn of the year,” the periodical stated. “In contrast to the situation 12 months-ago, consumers will enter 1939 with relatively moderate stocks of most products, Sheet and strip inventories, while heavy in some instances, will be lighter than was anticipated at the time buyers were actively covering forward

In addition to the favorable outlook for the automobile industry which currently is operating at a

16-month high, the magazine said|

“several other ‘sources of steel business give promise of lending considerable support to production next quarter.”

The magazine’s scrap steel com- |}

posite was reported at $14.66, a loss of 9 cents, but finished steel ahd iron and steel composites were unchanged at $56.50 and $36.36, respectively.

Hence, this time of year, with its variable: weather, is a headache. Bob Marko, a gag writer for Al Jolson’s program remembers fondly how the elements helped point upa script written about rain. : They had typed out their comedy lines in the midst of traditional Hollywood sunshine. On the night of the broadcast, along came a steady: downpour that madegthe audience: roar with laughter at the fun being poked at the weather.
