Witnesses Say Mrs. Dull Was Striking Employer When They Arrived.

ST. JOSEPH, Mich, Dec. 14 (U. P.).—A blond secretary’s love for her employer was described today in a packed courtroom where Mrs. Fern Patricia Dull is on trial for the slaying.of Walter William Holbrook. ‘ Mrs. Dull, the secretary and

of shooting Holbrook, a former assistant prosecutor, when sie learned that he had paid a visit to his

estranged wife.

Six witnesses yesterday described the scene of the slaying outside the Benton Harbor police station shortly after midnight on Oct. 17. Robert Zook, a WPA night watchnan; William J. Pugh, a merchant policeman, and Stephen Emery, an industrial policeman said they were standing on a corner near the police ‘station when they heard shots.~ The men said they ran down the street and came upon Mrs. Dull,

The witnesses told the jury, composed mostly of farmers and two housewives that Mrs. Dull was mumbling: ! “Take that, and that, and that.” Fireman Adam Weber and Maurice Shepardson, othem prosecution witnesses, were asked by Defense Attorney George Gould if they had noticed bruises or discolorations on Mrs. Dull’s face when they saw her immediately after the shooting.

- All admitted that they did see black and blue marks on her face when she was taken to the police station, . 5 Mrs. Dull told police at the time of the shooting that Holbrook had beaten her. : _ Pugh said he told Mrs. Dull, as she stood over Holbrook’s prostrate body, to give him the gun. “She didn’t answer so I hollered louder.” “As he lay there, did Holbrook speak toc you?” Assistant Prose-

“No, he was just groaning. “How did Mrs. Dull act?” Gould asked. So “She looked bewildered as if she didn’t know what -I was talking about.” Dr. Carl A. Mitchell, a surgeon in Benton Harbor for 32 years, testified that Holbrook’s death was due to four wounds, all apparently irom a 22-caliber gun. Two were in the back and two others in the right side of the head. :
