Boilermakers And Hoosiers ~ Win Net Tilts
Cardinals, Anderson College Victorious; DePauw to Entertain Aces.
TONIGHT Evansville at DePauw. Tri-State at Olivet, Mich. Eastern Illinois at Indiana State. By United Press Purdue triumphed in its season inaugural, Indiana took its third straight, and Ball State and Ander-
son won Indiana College Conierence basketball games last night. The Boilermaker five, showing oc-
casional flashes of the speed that}
brought. them the Big Ten championship last season, downed Monmouth of Monmouth, Ill, defending Midwest Conference champion, 36 to 26, in the Purdue Fieldhouse. Capt. Gene Anderson, husky Purdue center, led the scoring with six field goals and a free toss. Fred ~ Beretta, veteran guard, made seven = points and Dan Fisher, forward, six. Monmouth couldn’t halt the Boilermaker fast break. At Bloomington, the Hoosiers gained revenge for a defeat by Wabash the last game played in 1936, by trouncing the Little Giants, 47 to 23.
Cardinals Keep Record Clean
Both quintets played a driving game, although Wabash was unable to pierce consistently the Crimson defense. Indiana led, 23 to 10, at the half. Jack Berns, Wabash forward, took high point honors with 10 points. Hoosier scoring was well-divided, Paui-Armstrong and Bob Dro, forwards, making seven points each. Ball State’s. Cardinals kept their conference record clean by defeating Earlham, 28 to 26, on the Richmond court. A tough defense, which allowed only one field goal in the last half, sewed up the Richmond attack and the Cardinals overcame an 18-to-14 lead at the half. Big Jack Van Dyke, Anderson center, tossed in a field goal in the closing seconds to give his team a 33-t0-30 victory over Huntington.
Butler Drills for Games With Big Ten Foes
. Coach Tony Hinkle today geared up Butler basketball practice sessions to prepare for the invasion of two Big Ten teams over the weekend. The University of Iowa will appear in the Fieldhouse Saturday night and Wisconsin, recent victors over Notre Dame, will invade the Bulldogs’ court Monday night. Wis-. consin is new to the Bulldogs’ current schedule while the Hawkeyes stopped Butler’s string of early triumphs last season, 36 to 31. ‘For these two contests, Hinkle seems pleased with his present combination of Steiner, junior, and Dietz, sophomore, forwards; Perry, senior, center; Geyer, senior, and Richardson, sophomore,. guards, in the 44-10-26 victory over Valparaiso.

Local Outfit Comes From Behind to Nose Out Eastern Team.
The Warren, Pa., Penns will attempt to even things with the Kautsky All-Americans tonight in a league contest at Huntington, Ind., Rex Rudicel’s home town. Last night at Butler Fieldhouse the Kautsky professional basketball
team surged from behind in the last quarter to subdue the Penns, 39 to 37. . "The Penns were leading 35-31 late in the final period when the combination of Johnny Sines, Jewell Young and Glynn Downey hit the basket to pull the locals into two
before the final gun. Walt Stankey of the Penns paced the attack in the first half with four field goals but was held to one in the remaining time. Bill Laugh-
and Jefferson College, tallied two field goals and two free throws in the first half and then garnered four field goals in the final two periods to lead the scoring.
Improve in Second Half
Jewell Young sparkled better in the second half with three field goals compared to one field goal and one free throw in the initial periods. Johnny Sines scored three in the second half to add to his first quarter two-pointer. Frank
Baird aimed one accurately in each quarter to tie Sines for runnerup scoring honors for the Kautskys with eight points. : After the score had been tied three times, the Penns maintained a four-point lead, 29-25, at the end of the third quarter. The Kautskys rallied toward the close of the game, making seven field goals to the Penns’ four in the final frame. . The white basketball was used throughout the game. The Kautskys substituted frequently during the contest but the Penn's starting five played without relief. loops this season to date are 223, 221 and 212. Thus far this season he has seven totals of 700 or better. The story of Don Beatty, a stocky bachelor of 30, is one of a son following in the footsteps of an illustrious father. His dad, Willis G. Beatty, kept at one of the oldest sports until a few years ago, when his health failed. As a kid, Don Beatty tagged Bill Beatty to the old Jackson alleys, and when the youngster started to bowl at 15, his father took an interest in his work that never has lagged. The elder Beatty dreamed of his boy being the champion he turned out to be. And the dream was realized not because of any help from a professional teacher, but because the champien’s father straightened him out when he was putting too much or too little on the ball. A bowler as consistent as Don Beatty can’t miss looking very good indeed on the road, but, as he points out, the best appear very badly at times. There was the four-week exhibition trip taken by Max Stein of Belleville, Il1., following the A. B. C. of last spring. Stein the year before established an all-time record in the all-events with 2070. Yet on his exhibition trip he did some very indifferent bowling . . . from a low game of 128 to a high of 289. That's the beautiful part o’ the grand old game of American tenpins.

Face Chicago Medinah Club Swimmers Saturday.
The Indianapolis Athletic Club girls’ swimming team is to compete’ against the Medinah Club squad’ at Chicago Saturday night in its first meet this season. The squad is swimming as an unattached team. The second of the home-and-home series is to be held here in February. “If the free style swimmers are able to win their events, our squad has a good chance of winning the meet,” Dick Papenguth, coach, said, He is confident that Indianapolis entries in the diving, breast and back stroke events will do well. Last year the Medinah team won here by the narrow margin of 34-33. “Each year our squad is getting stronger,” Papenguth said, “and now with reserve power more nearly on a par with Medinah’s, we ought to give them a stiff battle.”
