“Good Music” by

James Thrasher

Marian Anderson, who usually seems to choose the “Magic Key” for her infrequent radio appearances, will be heard for the fifth time on the Sunday variety hour at 1 p. m. tomorrow, NBC-WIRE. The brilliant Negro contralto’s program has not been announced, but whatever she chooses certainly will be worth listening to. For, in addition to having one of the great voices of the century, she also possesses an excellent taste in program selection. Doubtless there is little necessity of reminding you that Miss Anderson will sing a recital at English’s next month, 2 2 = - Tonight finds Arturo Toscanini absent from the NBC Symphony Orchestra broadcast on a fourweeks vacatign. And in his place is Artur Rodzinski, the Cleveland Orchestra’s conductor, who will take over until the first Saturday in 1939. His = opening program is allRussian, containing a good bit of familiar music and one unfamiliar

Michael Starokadomsky, a contemporary Soviet composer. This will be the work’s American radio premiere, though it has been played previously in concert by the Boston and Cleveland Orchestras. The rest of the program is maas up of the Overture to Glinka’s “Russian and Ludmilla”; the

tomorrow, with both music and musicians making first American radio appearances. If a composition may be included in the list of debutantes, it is the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Anis Fuleihan, which Eugene List will introduce with the New York Philharmonic-Symphony on the regular broadcast concert at 2 p. m., CBS-WFBM. : A new singer, Maria Reining, young Viennese soprano, will make her microphone bow with Jose Iturbi and the Detroit Symphony on the same network at 8 p. m. Young Mr. List also will play the Franck Symphonic Variations on a program which includes a Bach Suite, Schubert's “Unfinished” Symphony and the Prelude to Wagner’s “Meistersinger.” ® ” 8

Beginning its final week, the Chicago City Opera will be on the

first act of Massenet’s “Manon.” Elen Dosia will sing the title part; other principals will be Giuseppe Cavadore, Andre -Burdino and Douglas Beattie. Louis Hasselmans will conduct. ” ” 2

Back again on its policy of straight concert programs, the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, under Erno Rapee, will offer an

ture to Wolf-Ferrari’s “The Secret of Suzanne,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade,” and songs by Viela Philo. NBC-Blue, 11 a. m. tomorrow, Speaking of Rimsky - Korsakov, the Rochester Philharmonic. and Guy Fraser Harrison are offering that master another posthumous chance to eat his words in an NBC-Blue broadcast at 2 p. m, Monday.

said of his pupil, Arensky, after the latter had gone over into Tschaikowsky’s camp, that Arensky soon would be forgotten. The Rochester Orchestra will play Arensky’s Variae tions on a Theme by Tschaikowsky, which is a standard and popular item of the string orchestra reper
