Committees to study such diverse subjects as business monopoly and aquatic life conservation, election
expenditures and phosphate resources, un-American activities and Puerto Rigan courts—nearly a score in all—were set up in the 75th Congress. : : A few ended their work even before Congress adjourned in June, but most of the major investigations are coming to a close riow-and committee staffs are rushing reports for submission early in the new session.

committee, the Senate committees on election expenditures, civil liberties, profit-sharing and incentive taxation, and the House committee investigating un-American activities aré among those expected to complete their work soon.
Record in Quantity
The report of the La Follette civil liberties committee will be based on a record which quantitatively, at least, is among the most impressive of Congressional studies in recent years. This study goes back to 1936 and the record so far, in text and ex-
hibits, consists of more than 13 million words, in 35 volumes. More than 400 witnesses have been heard in about 100 actual days of hearings. : The investigation has still more ground te cover, with hearings to be held in California next month on agricuitural labor conditions. Senator La Follette has set Jan. 15 as the deadline for a report which may recommend legislation aimed at employers’ associations, strikebreaking, vigilante groups and violence in labor disputes. ings, with private utility representatives attempting to show the unsoundness of the TVA electric rate yardstick. Many weeks of testimony ‘here and in Knoxville have squelched effectively all talk of TVA being “another Teapot Dome,” heard when the investigation was demanded last spring. Senator Vic Donahey, committee chairman, hopes to have a report ready early in the new Congress. Dies to Prepare Report The Dies committee, investigating un-American activities, will end its hearings this month and a report will be ready shortly after Jan. 1. Chairman Dies said today he hopes the committee will recommend legislation to “outlaw communism and bunds” in this country. tures is expected to be one of the most important of the session. The committee, headed by Senator Morris Sheppard (D. Tex.), is expected to recommend legislation to curb use of public funds in elections as the result of findings that WPA was used for political: ends in many States. . "This report also may have an important part in shaping new work relief legislation. The committee now is receiving final reports from its investigators in the field. A Senate committee investigating
