"FORMER TVA HEAD

PREDICTS LOSSES

Appliances Are ‘Oversold,’ A. E. Morgan Charges. WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (U. P).—

Former Chairman Arthur E. Morgan of the Tennessee Valley Author-

“ity charged today that TVA’s power

business will register a loss of $3,156,852 annually when its seven power dams are in full operation. Mr. Morgan, testifying before the joint Congressional committee investigating the authority, asserted that residential customers in the TVA area have been “greatly oversold” on electrical appliances in an attempt to boom the agency’s power business. When the seven power go into full service, unless TVA rates are revised upward, Mr. Morgan said, the income will be $9,919,209 a year, and the expenses $13,076,061. He said farmers and others in the TVA area were “required fo buy shundreds of dollars of electrical equipment to make a good show-

ing.” NEW ORDINANCES BEFORE COUNCIL

Two ordinances, one authorizing a $9000 bond issue to build four County bridges and another asking $9500 special appropriations for County expenses, were given first reading by the County Council today. The bridges, to be erecte® with WPA labor, are at 10th St. over Eagle Creek, at Camby and Mendenhall Roads;. Sherman Dr. and Todd Road and Sherman Dr. and Shelbyville Road. They are all over small streams. Included in the request for special appropriations is a $700 item for Criminal Court to pay salaries of a Grand Jury for the remainder of the year. The July term Grand Jury, which was to have completed the year’s work, was discharged recently by Judge Frank P. Baker. A new jury will be drawn if the appropriation is granted. Another $3000 item is for the County Clerk's office.

Police Call Police Call Police Call

DETROIT, Dec. 5 (U. P).— A young man walked briskly into homicide division of Police . Headquarters today, helped himself to the phone on the sergeant’s desk and talked for a considerable time. As he was going out the door the sergeant was notified of the charges on-the call— which was to Cleveland. He lost no time|collaring the visitor. Homer Jones, 23, of Detroit, was amazed, “Why,” he said, “I thought you could come in here and make long distance calls free of charge.” Disgusted police spent the next few moments thumbing through the book trying to find a suitable charge. They finally settled upon “disorderly per= son” and locked Jones up.

MINE STUDENTS MIX THEORY, PRACTICE

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn, Dec. 5 (U. P.).—Practical mining techniques with all the dirt and grime of the ordinary mine—that’s the theory of the University of Minnesota mining school.

And to carry out the theory 22 mining students descended into a smoke and gas filled heating tunnel to practice use of oxygen mining apparatus. | Directed by A. J. Stromquist, traveling demonstrator from the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the students went into a tunnel filled with a mixture of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and smoke to remain for two hours. | Before the test the students practiced with the apparatus in the open air, learning how to operate the machine.

GIRL ESCHEWS FRILLS

THE PAS, Manitoba, Dec. 5 (U. P.).—Miss Mary McMillan, 19, has no use for dresses or other feminine frills. She lives at Ilford, 200 miles northeast of here, where she and her mother operate a general store. She finds men’s trousers much more

comfortable than dresses.
