STOCKS, BONDS “ARE SLUGCISHIN
FUrde Dwindles Sharply; Some Special Issues Make Gains. NEW. YORK, Dec. 3 (U.P)—
- Trading in stocks and bonds dwindled sharply today with prices mov-
ing irregularly in a narrow range. 4
Leading issues were dormant with net changes insignificant. A few special stocks gathered a following
and in a few instances wide gains am
were noted. An example of the lat-
ter was New York Shipbuilding pre-|4%
ferred which made a new high at 841%, up 5 points. - Heaviest trading was divided among Continental Motors which equaled its high at 3, up %4, and New York Shipbuilding common stock at 15%, up 1, and also equal to the high. Greyhound was relatively active at 201%, up %. Gains of a point or more were noted in American Tobacco B, Har-bison-Walker, and U. S. Steel preferred. American Can lost 1% points as did Manhattan Railway preferred. Wright Aero lost a point. Otherwise the market moved in a fractional area with declines slightly in the majority. Trading was so dull near .the close that the tape stood idle at intervals. Steel shares lost small fractions
in very dull turnover. Motors were [B¢
mixed with Chrysler up 4 and General Motors off that amount. Coppers also balanced off small gains and losses. Aviations and oils were steady to firm. The rails eased slightly. The actual change from yesterday amounted to practically zero in the averages, leaving the market slightly lower on the week. Government bonds moved higher
while domestic corporate bond is-|B
sues made an, irregular decline.
Local Livestock
Local hog prices for weights above 160 pounds lost 15 cents today, the Bureau of Agricultural Economics ‘announced. The early yesterday's top of $7.95 on 160-170
pounders declined to $7.80. Friday’s|c
late market tended 10 cents lower, ending at $7.85 top. Lightweights and pigs were steady. Estimated receipts for hogs were 2500; cattle, 50; calves, 25, and sheep, 100.

SUBSIDY STOPPED IN WHEAT EXPORTS
British Millers Insist on Removal of Competition.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 (U. P.).—

2| The Agriculture Department has
disclosed that it has agreed to cease subsidizing flour exports to Great Britain and Ireland as a part of the deal to sell those countries 20,000,000 bushels of wheat. British millers insisted on that
provision for removal of American milling competition as a part of the agreement under which they will purchase the subsidized wheat over the next several months. The transactions were a part of Secretary of Agriculture Wallace's program to export 100,000,000 bushels of American surplus wheat during - the fiscal year ending next June . 30. Officials pointed out that under the British-American trade agreement the 6 cents a bushel tariff now on American wheat imports will be removed Jan. 1, thus reducing the amount of subsidy paid exporters by the Federal Surplus Commodities Corp. The sale brought to approximately 65,000,000 bushels wheat exported under the Wallace program. The Corporation is now paying exporters a subsidy of approximately 22 cents a bushel on wheat and $1.05 a barrel on flour.

“Good Music” by James Thrasher
Though no one expects lightning to strike twice in the same place, especially when that place is a concert hall, it may be that tomorrow’s broadcast by the New York Phil-harmonic-Symphony Orchestra will Semand an added share of attenon. For it will be the occasion of another violinist’s radio debut. And after the sensational success of young Robert Virovai a few weeks ago on this same series, the public will have its ears pricked up.. Tomorrow’s new artist is Orlando Barera, 31-year-old Italian. He made his New York debut about three, year ago and since then has keen ‘soloist with the Boston Symphony. Likewise he has appeared with most of the leading European orchestras. Mr. Barera’s vehicle will be the thrice-familiar and beloved Mendelssohn Concerto. John Barbirolli also will conduct the Haydn Symphony in D Major and Brahms’ 1, CBS-WFBM, 2 p.m. : 2 8 = Beethoven and Wagner at their monumental greatest comprise the greater part of the program selected for tonight’s NBC Symphony broada |cast by Maestro Toscanini. To be- *| gin with there will be Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, the “Eroica,” and following intermission, three Wagner selections: The “Waldweben” music from “Siegfried”; “Siegfried’s

“Die Goetterdaemmerung,” and the : “Rienzi” Overture. Knowing Mr. Toscanini and his ability to wring unexpected worth and dignity from such composers as Rossini and Meyerbeer, it may be supposed that he may even make the “Rienzi” Overture sound like great music. . . . The broadcast, as usual, is on WIRE at 9 p. m.

A Hoosier, John Hale of Richmond, will be among the Metros politan Opera aspirants in tomorrow’s radio auditions, 4 p. m. on NBC-Blue. An Earlham College graduate, Mr. Hale has had several
‘|vears’ experience in ii and con- | cert singing.
An added feature of tomorrow's auditions will be the reminiscences of Wilfred Pelletier on his 20 years at the Metropolitan. A famous conductor, Mr. Pelletier is director of the company’s French repertory and musical director of the broadcast auditions. ” » 8 For a real novelty tune in WENR at 11 p. m. tomorrow for a broadcast of Tschaikowsky’s Symphony No. 3, in D Major, played in recorded form by the London Symphony under Albert Coates. As you know, the Rus~ sian composer’s first three syme phonies virtually never are played. It should be worth your while, if only as a musical curiosity.

Ezio Pinza, leading basso ‘of the Metropolitan's Italian contingent for the past 12 years, will be the Detroit Symphony's guest on its regular CBS-WFBM broadcast at 8 p. m. tomorrow. He will sing arias from Verdi's “Ernani” and Donizetti's “L’Elisir D’Amore,” and songs by Cimara and Carelli.
