Cal. Prepares For Notre Dame Encounter|
Annual Rivalry Tilt Tomorrow Expected to Draw 95,000; Ben Sheridan of Irish Injures Shoulder in Collision And May Miss Big Game.
By HENRY M’'LEMORE United Press Staff Correspondent LOS ANGELES, Dec. 2—You could have turned back the calendar a full eight years today and except for the automobiles, and the women's - | hats, the citizens of Los Angeles wouldn't even have noticed it. Because for the first time in that many years, since 1930, an undefeated, untied Notre Dame team is coming to town to play a Univeisity
is nobody’s pushover. Los Angeles
again had a one-track mind—football,
Not just football, but football of an aged-in-wood, extra-thick holiday brand. On one side is the leading claimant for the mythical national championship, an Irish machine that- has ridden over eight powerful opponents without a setback. On the other hand is a tough outfit which already has the Western bid to the Rose Bowl tucked
Add to that a 13-year-old rivalry that easily ranks as one of America’s most intriguing and you have some idea of the football party that will be held before 95,000 or more paying guests in Memorial Coliseum to-
morrow. ; Although Notre Dame wasn’t to arrive until late tenight the reputations of the Irish have preceded them and the odds-boards re-
‘lacted accordingly. First Notre Dame
was favored 10-7, then 8-5, and then 5-3, or seven points and even. Skies were clear and blue, assuring each team an opportunity to play the game it favors A sharp blow was struck at the Irish when halfback Ben Sheridan collided with a teammate while running down under one of the passes, injuring his shoulder. Coach Elmer Layden was undetermined as to whether Sheridan could play. ‘The game tomorrow is the 13th in a series that began in 1926 and which has produced some of the most spectacular feats in recent years. One-point and one-touch-down victories have been the rule, and Notre Dame has: won seven games to four with one tie.

people down in Memphis or out in in on a couple of very interesting
Ry The betting boys installed Notre Dame a 17-10 favorite over Southern
California and for all we know the figures are warranted. The Irishers
s haven't been beaten all season while the Trojans have been turned
back twice. They were downed in their very. first outing of the season by Alabama and later they dropped a onepoint decision to the University of Washington. In making Notre Dame the favorite the betting: boys
»| undoubtedly took these facts into
consideration. It is faulty reasoning to hold that if the Trojans couldn't beat a subnormal Alabama team, for instance, they can’t hope to béat a great Notre Dame team. The Southerners were loaded for bear when they faced the Trojans.
Team at Peak A Week Ago
Despite the fact it was the first game of the season they had put in plenty of work for it. The Southerners were, in fact, as good if not better than at any other time during the season.
The Trojans made no extra preparations for the Alabama game. They took it in stride, as an opening game where a certain amount of loose play was inevitable. As the season advanced the Trojans got better. The way they ran away and hid from U. C. L. A. a week ago indicates they are at their 2 peak. The psychological edge should be with the Trojans. They haven't any perfect record to protect. They

don’t have to win to get into the Rose Bowl. They're already in, win, lose or draw. Another thing, they are pretty well burned up because of the caustic criticism that has been directed at them for inviting Duke. They are resentful of the implication they picked a pushover, though how anybody can call a team that hasn't been beaten, tied or even scored on a pushover is baffling,
Anyway, the Trojans are in an angry mood and they intend to let Notre Dame have both barrels. This is important only in establishing the team’s mental attitude. The Irish may be gooa enough to take both barrels and say, “Is that all you've got?” The Memphis game brings undefeated Tennessee together with. a very good Mississippi team. Tennessee figures to win but not in a romp. We are told this is the greatest all-round, do-anything team Maj. Bob Neyland has produced in his 12 years. One of our scouts came back from Knoxville saying the Tene nessee team could beat Texas Christian, Duke, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame or Oklahoma. We don’t know why he left out Spearfish Normal or Slippery Rock, but we do know he was practically ga-ga about the young men.

Athletics Dirsciors Study Rose Bowl Problem.
CHICAGO, Dec. 2 (U. P.).—Big Ten athletic officials centered attention on minor sports schedules today, sidetracking until tomorrow Giscussions on revised training table rules and possible Conference participation in the Rose Bowl game.
Football schedules for 1942 were completed last night when Chicago and Indiana, finding it difficult to fill minimum four-game cards, agreed to play each other. It had been feared that the schools would wind up with only three games— one under the championship play minimum,
visors ‘have been studying the training table and Rose Bowl problems sit.ce the meeting started yesterday.
~ Coast Reported Willing
It was rumored that members of the Pacific Conference, which annually invites an outside university to meet its champion in -the Rose Bowl, is in favor of making an agreement to play the Big Ten champion each year. Such a move besides being an added attraction of pitting champions of the country’s two major loops against each other, would eliminate difficulties arising every
lected. No official action has been taken on the matter. Chicago indicated by approving the four-game schedule that it would not drop out of Conference football, as has been rumored Six teams scheduled topheavy in-tra-Big-Ten cards of six games each for 1942, indicative of a desire to participate in bowl games. If teams played six games it would insure a truely championship team.

NEW YORK, Dec. 2 (U. P)— Benny Friedman, one of the great football players of all time, is happy today because at last he is coaching a team that has some real stars
. lon it.
Tomorrow he sends that team—a combination of all-stars from New York City schools—against the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National Professional League in a charity game for the benefit of Catholic, Jewish and Protestant refugees from Europe. Friedman, a forward-passing pioneer when he played quarterback for Michigan in 1924-25-26, has been coaching at City College of New York since 1934. Before that he was backfield coach at Yale for a year, a professional player and coach of the Dodgers. But never did he have such an array of talent playing for him as he will tomorrow. At City College he frequently had squads that contained only 13 or 14 regulars. Today he gleefully talked of substituting

Three recruits from the football squad joined Coach Glenn Curtis’ courtment yesterday. Edmund Cissna, Evansville, 1s a senior letterman who plays tackle in football and center in basketball. Kenny Vogel, Terre Haute, junior letterman in both sports, plays quarterback and forward. Jack Bradbury, Sullivan, is a sophomore end and forward. five and six men at a time so he, can keep Fordham, Columbia, Man-" hattan, C. C. New-York, and N. ¥. U, men together on the field. Friedman had been working with his “dream team” only since Sunday and will have but 12 plays tomorrow. But some of them are so complicated that writers watching the practice session had to ask Friedman how many men handled the ball on some of the formations. In the lineup are the best local players of 1938, headed by Colum= bia's great passing star, Sid Luckman, and including five captains— Mike Kochel, Fordham; Phil Swia=don, N. Y. U.; Jerry Stein, C. C. N. Y.; Al Caruso, Manhayan, and Jack Wright, Columbia.
The Dodgers, who finished their regular National League season on Thanksgiving, hope to win the game in order to support the professional theory that a good paid team can, when it is in shape after a hard season, lick any college team—regu= lar or all-star. The game will be played at Ebbets Field and figures to draw a gate of $50,000.
