(Copyright, 1938, by United Press) WASHINGTON, Dec. 1.—A poll of o | Congressional views by the United Press today revealed that the nation has elected a new Congress with strong sentiment for amendment of o| the Wagner Labor Relations Act,

© increase of the old age pensions and a larger national defense budget. The sampling of Congressional sentiment covered both House and

‘I Senate members who were willing to

commit themselves on nine major political issues. Returns from as many as two-thirds of the new House were received in response to several questions. Senate replies were scattered but, significantly, in-

replies from new House members. The poll, although not conclusive, indicated that a strong move to obtain amendment of the Wagner act can be expected, although members are by no means agreed on the exact form such amendments shall take. Larger Pensions Favored

Sentiment for larger old-age pensions as expressed .in replies to the United Press was such as virtually to insure serious consideration for more liberal grants. here of the ‘Republican National Committee. Ohio’s members and attached politicians lost no time in moving about among the politicians from other parts of the country talking up their prospective 1940 candidates —Senator-elect Robert A. Taft and Governor-elect John W. Bricker.

Nor did they overlook the fact that Ohio has sent five men to the White House—politicians being superstitious. Nor did they fail to point out that Republicans had recaptured Ohio, whereas they missed in New York, the home state of a prospective rival for the nomination, Thomas E. Dewey, the racketbusting District Attorney.

Find Dewey Sentiment

The Ohioans found considerable talk around about young Mr. Dewey, despite his defeat. The name of Senator Vandenberg of Michigan, the leading candidate for a time until the emergence of others in the recent election, also was mentioned. The Senator, himself, moved about smiling and shaking hands with the assembled party leaders, and also made a

speech. He was the only prospective Presidential candidate present.

There was an interesting contrast;

at the meeting, symptomatic of the fight going on within the party. The talk generally bespoke the theme of the newer, progessive element of the party—that is, acceptance of most of the New Deal with the proviso that the machinery must be improved and the gains made by President Roosevelt consolidated. This sort of talk favored some newer party figures. But the only important action taken by the committee revealed power still in the hands of the Old Guard group. That was the election to the executive committee, the powerful inner group, of ex-Senator Daniel O. Hastings of Delaware, the bailiwck of the du Ponts, instead of Kenneth F. Simpson of New York, who managed the almost successful Dewey campaign for Governor and is regarded as Mr. Dewey’s sponsor in the National Committee. This would indicate a preference, as far as the National Committee is

concerned, for the more conservative type of candidate. It was notice
