“Good Music” by by
James Thrasher
The serious-music listener is notoriously allergic to correspondence of the fan letter sort. Probably it isn’t exaggerating ,to say that the swing band leader, popular - singer or serial cast may draw a hundred letters to the orchestra conductor's
In the light of this established fact, the mail and telegram response to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s first broadcast Wednesday is surprising and encouraging. Franklin Miner; the orchestra manager, reports that “dozens” of telegrams from out-of-town listeners diready have arrived, though the bulk of the mail will be
york headquarters and forwarded ere. Fabien . Sevitzky, the conductor, counted among his telegrams of congratulation two from prominent American composers. One was from Frederick Converse, whose “Mystic Trumpeter” was included on the radio program. He wired: “Splendid broadcast; ‘Trumpeter’ very fine. We were all delighted.” Arthur Shepard sent “congratulations on an excellent broadcast and a refreshing program.” ” » ”
For the second time in a fortnight, one of John Barbirolli's New York Philharmonic-Symphony players will appear as soloist in a transcribed concerto as a Sunday broad-
sent to the Columbia network’s New |
public. Also on the program will be Rez-
nicek’s Overture to “Donna Diana”;
Resphighi’s “The Fountains of Rome,” and Tschaikowskys: Symphony No. 4. 8 8 =
Twentieth Century music will pres dominate on this. evening’s NBO Symphony Orchestra program, which Arturo Toscanini will conduct on NBC-WIRE at 9 p. m.
Three of the four works were composed in the 1900's: Ravel's “Daphnis and Chloe” Suite, No. 2, is from the ballet music written for Diaghilev in 1912; Kurt Atterburg’s “Midsummer Dances” are from the Swedish composer's opera, “Midsummer's Night,” which won the Schubért Centennial prize in 1928, and Giuseppe Martucci’'s Symphony. No. 1 was introduced in this country by Mr. Toscanini five years ago. Completing the program will be the brisk and bustling Overture ta Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride”: music of a freshness and contems porary flavor that belies its 723 years. 2.8 = 7% Elisabeth Rethberg, the Metro= politan Opera soprano, will intro= duce a Czech folk song to radio audiences for the first time on her Detroit Symphony solo appearance tomorrow night. In addition she& will sing an aria from “La Boheme™ and songs by Schubert, Franz, Mos zart and Albeniz. A feature of the orchestra’s pore’ tion of the program will be Dee bussy’s “Clair de Lune,” in an ars rangement by Andre Kostelanets rather than the more familiar one
