OPENING OF YULE SEAL SALEIS SET FOR NEXT WEEK

City and County Residents To Get Stamps Through Mails; Lilly to Direct.

‘The 32d annual tuberculosis Christmas seal sale is to be opened next week by the Marion County Tuberculosis Association when residents of Indianapolis and Marion County receive their seals by mail. For the fifth consecutive year, Eli Lilly, civic and business leader, is to serve as chairman of the sale. “Protect your home from Tuberculosis” is the slogan of the 1938

sale, according to Miss Mary A. Meyers, Association executive secretary. A Victorian mother and two children lighting a window candle picture this slogan, Miss Meyers stated today. The lighted candle is

tuberculosis that has been kindled by the Christmas seals and their mission in protecting homes from the dread disease, she explained. “Tuberculosis breaks up more homes than any other disease,” Miss Meyers pointed out. “If a father or mother is stricken, this means separation from the family to protect them from the disease.” She also pointed out that tuberculosis annually claims the lives of 40,000 persons between 15 and 45 years of age. This creates a serious economic problem, she stated. Maig’ of these victims are parents who leave orphaned children. Christmas seals finance a year-round program of control to protect all homes, she explained.

Purposes Outlined

The three-fold purpose of the sale is to: 1. Find all active cases of tuberculosis and place them under medical supervision.

2. Seek all persons exposed to tuberculosis and build up their resistance.

3. Educate people in the healthful way of living. “This forward-looking program of life saving made possible through Christmas seals deserves the moral and financial support of every individual,” Grier M. Shotwell, chairman of the Association’s volunteer speakers’ bureau, said today. “The marked reduction in the death rate is proof that the disease

can be conquered. But there is considerable work ahead. I am sure we can count on the generous cooperation of residents of our community “in carrying on the fight.”

Sale Supports Work

" Mr. Shotwell also pointed out that’ the program of the Marion County Tuberculosis Association is made possible only through the annual seal sale. Until 1919 the American Red Cross conducted the sale. The following year the National Tuberculosis Association and its affiliated associations took charge. The stamps in the corners of this year’s sheets are portraits of pioneers in tuberculosis history.

CLAIM DEVICE TAKES POWER FROM SUN

LONDON, Nov. 25 (U. P.).—An invention which if practical may revolutionize the electrical, gas and coal industries is being developed by a British company. Its inventor, a French scientist, declares it will extract electrical power from sunlight and do all the work of a generating station. It is called the Helio-Electric Generating Cell, and a number of these wired together on the roof of a building and connected with storage batteries will produce at least 60 amperes an hour even on the dullest day, it is said. An official at the National Physical Laboratory where the cell has undergone tests said, “It definitely produces electricity.” Other scientists are skeptical. Prof. A. M. Low, the well-known rhysicist, was quoted as saying that while in theory the cell had im-
