rkey Day Bills

By JAMES THRASHER

Indianapolis theaters’ custom of giving

opening their week’s bills on Thanks-

Day scarcely needs advance notice at this late date, for it is be-

coming as traditional and pleasant as turkey and cranberries. 3 The news, perhaps, is that the Indiana and the Lyric will offer their

current attractions to holiday crowds.

“Angels With Dirty Faces,” the

James Cagney, Pat O’Brien, Humphrey Bogart, “Dead End” Kids.melo-

drama, will continue at W. Wash-

ington St.’s neo-Spanish temple of the cinema muse. - And the Lyric will be offering the solid swing of Glen Grey and his Casa Loma boys, making its usual change of bill on Friday. ; The other three first-run houses will offer a variety of film accompaniment to that pleasant afterdinner feeling. And since Thanksgiving is essentially a day of family gathering, Loew’s major feature would seem to be weil timed. The Hardy family series, with its doings of the “average, middle class” American family, still continues to hold up in popularity and surprise even its producers with its increasing success.

Sat On a Bee

Having started furious activity in the series-picture field, it now con“tinues its own set with “Out West With the Hardys.” Once again, Lewis Stone, Mickey Rooney, Ce-

celia Parker, Fay Holden and Ann Rutherford will appear on Loew's screen to chronicle the typical and down-to-earth joys and sorrows of this film family. Completing the bill is “Adventure in Saraha” and, as a special attraction, Walt Disney’s “Ferdinand the Bull.” Ferdinand, in his own pasture, has been as much of a surprise as the Hardys. He started out as a children’s book by Munro Leaf (and with perfectly elegant pictures by Robert Lawson). By the time last Christmas rolled around, Ferdinand had entered the best-seller class. And grownups were buying him, not for the children, but to read for themselves about the shy young bull who loved to sit around and smell flowers, and who probably never would have had any excitement in his life if he hadn’t sat down on a bee one day.

Thrillers at Apollo _ It’s quite a jump, as you'll notice “from the pictures at your right, from Ferdinand to the Apollo bill. But the Apollo management had its

finger on the public pulse when it booked in two more horror pictures, «White Zombi” and “The Walking Dead.” No, the management isn’t afraid of what its double-screecher may do to Thanksgiving digestion. Since this seems to have developed into a story of surprises, it might be well to recall what happened at the Apollo a few weeks ago when Messrs. Lugosi and Karloff were presented in “Dracula” and “Frankenstein.” The public, you will remember, stormed the doors, begging, bribing or pushing, according to their tempers and finances, for a look at these T-year-oid thrillers.

Mr. Auer Returns

With Hollywcod becoming yearly more citcumspect and euphemistic, it seemed ‘that the public was hungry for a bit of the ghoulish and ghostly. Since Indianapolis’ reaction was typical of the country’s reception, showmen began looking for other old films with which to

scare friends and paralyze people. The Apollo has the result. At the Circle you will find the “Little Tough Guys,” who are only a shade thinner skinned than the

their’ debut “In -Society.” With them, to add some humor of a gentler sort, will be Mischa Auer, Mary Boland and Edward Everett Horton. Incidentally, Mr. Auer, that notorious scene-stealer, finally gets a top-billing in this picture. And to finish out the doublebarreled entertainment, there is a melodrama titled “The Storm,” with action and melodrama on shore and shipboard.

In New York—

Ex-Dictator Struts — Aft Stork Club.

By GEORGE ROSS ___

EW YORK, Nov. 23.—The dictators are having thew way with things in Europe, usurping whatever territorial stakes they happen to claim, and living the iife of the Rileys. :

Meanwhile, an ex-dictatorial figure stalks through New York and his everyday pursuits, unmoved by what happens on the front pages He is none other than Gerardo Machado, former Iron Man of Cuba, who escaped from the hot little island in the dead of a violent night, in order to save his life at {the height of a revolt. ; Ex-Iron Man Machado, an elderly, lonely, swarthy-skinned man with steely eyes, a scrubby gray imustache and a wan expression, has resided in New York for several years, ill in health and, it is said, in spirit, too. Yet he is a frequent visitor at . the Stork Club, {where he prefers an inconspicuous {corner from which to watch the cou|ples on the dance floor. Hovering near him always are two hulking companions, for Machado did not depart Cuba as a popular idol. By way of vicarious fulfillment of nostalgia, this aging exile gets around to Manhattan’s rhumba dens once or twice a week and, with four vigilant eyes ever on him, he even ventured out to dance.

heeled in millionaire style and that he lives amidst lavish surroundings. He was seen in the Stork at about the time Hitler was storming into the Sudeten zones. The conversation all around him dealt with that subject. Cuba's former Iron Man listened indifferently, however, to talk about the totalitarians who rule as he once did. J ” ”

AYMOND SCOTT, composer of such oddly named pieces as “Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals” and “Square Dance for Eight Egyptian Mummies,” certainly disappointed his followers when he named. his new baby girl plain and simple Carolyn.

Whether your taste is for hilarity or horror, it should be satisfied in the Thanksgiving bills promised by downtown theaters. Above we have Walt Disney’s conception of “Ferdinand the Bull,” that bovine of the delicate ego who gained fame in Munro Leaf’s children’s book of the same title. The all-color cartoon will be an added feature on Loew’s double bill. Ye At the right we have Bela Lugosi (left) and Boris Karloff, brought back by the Apollo after their popular revival appearance in the twin chillers “Dracula” and “Frankenstein.” This time*® Mr. Lugosi will be seen in another horror film of yesteryear, “White Zombi.” Mr. Karloff’s vehicle is a revival of “The Walking Dead.”

IG CITY WONDERS: Greenwich Village is the last survivor of more than 20 villages once exisiing on Manhattan Island. Covering about 863 acres, it has 41 churches and a university and its eight savings banks control nearly 7 per cent of the total savings in the country. It is bigger than Niagara Falls, Troy, Wilkes-Barre or Charlotte, but the Village is best known, as far as we're concerned, as the place where W. Fourth St. crosses W. 12th St.

We've written before about the mysterious lady of Russian mien who has been turning up alone at the opening nights for five years and never yet has consented to reveal her identity.

Now we have just caught up with a little lady who has been coming to the restaurant in the Hotel Taft every night at seven. She takes a table near the band, instructs the waiter to bring each course at intervals of every half hour, completes her dinner in a steady silence at 10, pays her check, leaves no tip
