Williams Tells Rose Bowl How to Outsmart Texans
By JOE WILLIAMS - Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Nov. 22.—Texas Christian University, unbeaten and untied, and playing in a hard league, is one of the great football teams of the year. Ft. Worth is its home, Thirty miles away is Dallas, home of
the Cotton Bowl.
The Cotton Bowl game, like all the other bowl games which have

More than 40 bowlers, paced by Bill Behrens with a 655, achieved the honor count list inelast night’s league matches, but they made it with scores one likes to forget. Of that two-score only four could get above the 650 mark. Two pins under Behrens was John Murphy of the Optimist League and tied at 650 were Barnhorst of the Fraternal loop and Joe Flajs, of the Indiana Bell circuit. Team scores dropped under the 2900 total and few squads could rise above 285(). Behrens started out as if set for/a new season’s individual high with a 262 but slid 49 pins to a 213 and then rolled an ordinary 180 finale. In the Holy Cross loop the Don |W Hoover Jewelry quintet, composed of the five Sheehan brothers, stopped the Hoop Barber Shop in
straight games.
The first annual doubles and

The Marott’s shaded Pepple’s in the first game by three pins, 848 to 845, banged away to an almost 150pin margin in the middle roll as Pepple’s slipped, 894 to 747, and finished with a heavy 939 to Pepple’s 780. copied after the original Rose Bowl
When continental New Orleans, the “Paris of the South,” if you care to believe the local Chamber of Commerce, began losing its winter tourist. business, mainly to semitropical Florida, a week-long sports program, culminating in a Bowl game, was innovated.
This season the Dallas game could be unusually important in the Bowl scene because one of the native teams ranks with the national ‘leaders. I refer naturally to the Texas Christians. Presented with ga fortuitous chance to steal some of the Rose Bowls thunder, the good citizens want to keep the Christians at home
It seems that Mr. Elliott Roosevelt, son of the President, isin the radio business in Ft. Worth, and he has announced he will try to get his distinguished dad to come down .. from Washington to see the game.
The suggestion seems to be present that with the Christians on the field and the President of the United States on the sidelines, the Cotton Bowl—contemptuously referred to as an imitator by the Rose Bowl people—would have an attrac- - tion no rival group could possibly match. * To my knowledge this is the first
time the Chief Executive has ever|
been used, even temporarily, as a come-on for a football game, but|. then as the fellow said who ate the first snail, “There must.be a first time for everything.” But there are many powerful citizens in the vicinity of Pasadena and it may not be impossible to devise a suitable competitive presentation. I have in mind for one thing the members of the Supreme Court. It-is my thought these sedate gentlemen, wearing their grim black robes, and leading the cheers from the side lines, would make an impréssive spectacle, one that would command liberal space in the newspapers.
unusual that hundreds of people no doubt would travel across the continent to see, say, Chief Justice Hughes, the wind whistling merrily through his beard, calling on the stands for nine rahs, a locomotive and a firm, outspoken vote for the sanctity of the Constitution.
And between halves the [Rose Bowl people, if successful in negotiations, could put John Lewis and Bill Green in a five-round decision fight to decide the labor ehampionship. True, Green would have to give away a lot of weight but his superior footwork and vaunted skill in close should serve to even things up.
This not only would be an unusual attraction, well worthy of the attention of the nation’s press, an item of high importance to all Bowl game promoters, but—well, it does seem if Lewis and Green ever are going to come to an agreement on labor policy they’ll have to stand face to face and punch it out.
