Times Special SOUTH BEND, Nov. 22.—A special defense of insanity with a plea of not guilty will be filed this week in Circuit Court by William Krueger, 61, charged with first degree
murder . in connection with the
slaying of his 92-year-old father-in-
law, Jefferson Werner, Oct. 4, it was announced today. The slaying allegedly occurred in {he Werner home. Kreuger is held in jail without bond.

It was made primarily to gather basic information regarding the employment of women in industry. In a few instances in only three

$13.91, according to the third semiannual survey. To earn the $13.91, the average woman worker was paid 39.7 cents an hour and worked 35 hours a week. Comparable averages for men employed in the same industries were: Weekly earnings, $23.71; number of hours worked a week, 40.3; hourly earnings, 58.8 cents. The wage minimums set by the Wage-Hour Act are: First year, 25 30 cents; thereafter, 40 cents. Hours are on a corresponding scale. A maximum | work week of 44 hours is set for the first year, 42 for the second and 40 hours for thereafter. Among the plants included in the | survey were 252 which ‘also reported | for the same period in 1937. In these plants, the decrease in women | workers was at a smaller ratio than| the decrease in male workers. Total employment of 34,875 workers in| September, 1938, compared with |
44,093 employed a year earlier, a de- |B
cline of 20.9 per cent. The decrease in male employees | was 213 per cent and the number | of women employed dropped 19.9! per cent. The industries selected for this | study included stamped and pressed metal products, electrical machinery, foundries, machine shops, radios, phonographs and parts, furniture and glass and pottery. In the nondurable goods group, which includes textiles, foods, tobacco, leather, paper and printing, chemicals and rubber products. reports were available for 152 plants for both this period and the period last year.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa, Nov. 22 ©, P.).—National Guardsmen who have been guarding. the Swift and Co. packing plant here since Oct. 19 when strikers clashed with police, withdrew today under orders of Governor Nelson: G. Kraschel. The Governor said he believed there was no further need of keeping ‘the troops at the plant. William R. Tice, Woodbury County Sheriff, protested the withdrawal and asked Kraschel to reconsider and leave at least one or two units
stationed at the plant. The troops, numbering 225, already had started to leave when he filed his protest. Martial law had not been declared. The troops had been assigned to duty only at the plant. It has been operating on a partial basis since they assumed charge.
