YO SERIES OF 1939 CHEVROLET LONGER, LOWER

New Models Marked by Mechanical Innovations, N. A. Stuart Says.

Mechanical innovations in safety, comfort and operating. ease mark the 1939 Chevrolet. The cars look longer and lower, due to relocation of the appearance mass below the belt line. Advanced streamlining characterizes aerostream steel bodies by Fisher and is apparent in the new sheet metal treatment that plays a major part in the over-all effect. The two series, declares N. Stuart, zone manager, are designated as the Master De Luxe and the Master 85. They are identical as to power plant and, except for suspension and Mr. Stuart ’ gear ratio, as to chassis as well. The Master De Luxe features a redesigned independent front suspension, and the Master 85 remains conventional, but both springing systems have undergone revision, resulting in a smoother ride, greater roadability and more positive control. Steering has been made much easier throughout both lines. The gearshift steering column control is optional on both Chevrolet series at small extra cost. Chevrolet engineers, said Mr. Stuart, have perfected a positive vacuumoperated :gearshift mechanism. A flick. of a finger, without removal of the hand from the steering wheel, now performs all the operations possible with the conventional gearshift lever. Removal of the latter from the floor clears the driving compartment completely, leaving room for three persons in the front seat. The handbrake lever on all models, with and without vacuum gearshift, is removed to a convenient location at the driver’s left, under the cowl.

85-Horsepower Engine

Chevrolet's power plant, while basically the same as in 1938, has jundergone - numerous refinements, some of which result in greater economy, some in heightened dependability, and some in more economical servicing, according to MTF. Stuart. The plant itself is the six-cylinder, high - compression - 85-horsepower valve-in-head engine which has powered millions of Chevrolets. The self-lubricating ball-bearing water pump introduced during 1938 production is retained. A new ignition . distributor mounting simplifies octane adjustment. More positive lubrication of valve rocker arms is assured by a new oil pressure regulator. A rubberfloated harmonic balancer replaces the unit formerly used. Refinements in the carburetor and | manifold heat” control thermostat | heighten operating efficiency and! fuel economy. The “Tiptoe-Matic” clutch has new ventilator vanes formed in its pressure plate, for cooler running and higher efficiency.

safety, comfort and convenience in the new line. Harmonizing variants of brown in the upholstery, control knobs and trim.are relieved to a pleasing degree by chrome-plated hardware and fittings and by sparing use of brighter colors on the instrument panel, : Two’ upholstering materials—deep pile breathing-back mohair velvet and a broadcloth—are available in the Master De Luxe, and a single option, mohair velvet, in the Master 85. Front seats have been lightened and strengthened by a new steel tubular frame construction with welded tube reinforcements, without changing their outward appearance.

Control Knobs Recessed :

Soft-rolled front-seat backs are retained, as is the split-back construction of front seats in the twodoor sedan models. Instruments are regrouped for-easier reading, but remain in their: former location directly before the driver. Control knobs are recessed for safety, as is the locking back of the glove compartment. New chromium plated bolt-type locks are now furnished on all venfipanes. Rear quarter windows on certain models shave been fixed immovably in the rear quarter, but in the master de luxe line, with the exception of the business coupe, and also in the town sedan and coach of .the Master 85, they now slide back info the body rear quarter and may be “locked in any of 10 vositions.

13 BODY TYPES

1939 Models Are Longer And Roomier; Coil Springs Among Innovations.

Bigger, roomier and better looking, 1939 Plymouths are built on a wheelbase of 114 inches — two inches longer than last year. Over-all

length is 182 inches, exclusive of bumpers front and rear.

out. A new, V-type windshield adds more than six inches to body length above the belt. A longer hood now presents an added 10-inch sweep of painted surface that sweeps down to the lower grille. : Among innovations for next year are coil springs of amola steel that

mote-control gear shift on the steering column; high-torque engine performance; “true-steady” steering; all silent auto-mesh transmission, and a “safety signal” speedometer that flashes warning lights of different colors at various car speeds. The complete Plymouth line for 1939 includes five ‘“Readking” and eight de luxé body types, all on 114inch wheelbase and powered with the same new 82-horsepower engine of L-head design.

Headlamps in Fenders

Headlamps and taillights are streamlined into the fenders. A twist of the handle raises up one top section of the hood part way for convenience in lifting, and an automatic spring holds the panel in open position. Hood louvres are located on the rear part of hood side panels for better ventilation, and repeat the horizontal airfoil motif of the grille. The louvres are accented by two parallel chrome strips above and below the vents. The steering column jacket this year has a flare at the top, which curves out to the base of the steering wheel. Out of this comes the new remote gear shift lever, standard equipment on all de luxe models. To give full advantage of the gearshift location, Plymouth’s handbrake lever is moved over to the left of the wheel, but remains up underneath the cowl, out of the way. Upholstery Is Optional

Upholstery is optional, broadcloth or mohair. In the deluxe models the fabrics, in harmonizing shades, now are tailored in threepillow design, button-tufted and trimmed with three horizontal style lines across the back and on the seats. Door panels are upholstered in a corresponding pattern, repeating the three style lines of the bolster cushions. : Plymouth’s hydraulic brakes remain unchanged in principle, but this year, to give softer pedal pressure, a new brake . ning material is introduced that has a 10 per cent higher coefficient of friction. Centrifuse brake drums, combining the strength of steel with the ideal braking properties of cast iron, add to the safety of the braking system. The parking brake, entirely independent of the service brakes, operates on the drive shaft with a separate brake band worked by the pistol grip hand lever underneath the cowl to the driver's left. Safety-Signal Speedometer

This year all instruments and controls are centered directly in front of the driver, with this group dominated by Plymouth’s “safetysignal” speedometer—that automatically flashes a warning for three different driving speed zones. All illumination of the dial is indirect—except one bright colored light on the indicator needle that changes from green to amber at 30 miles an hour. . Between 30 and 50 the color remains ‘amber, buf above 50 changes to bright réd. Thus the same colors the driver is used to obeying in traffic lights now automatically flash inside the car whenever he drives outside the safest speed range.

10,000,000 WOMEN DRIVERS

In 1937, it was estimated that there were approximately 10,000,000 women drivers. In.1900, there were, as far as was known, 65 women

Bowes Lauds Good Service Station Men

“Good service station: oper= ators are the ‘first line of de- . fense’ against motoring troubles and annoyances,” said Robert M. Bowes, president of the Bowes-Seal Fast Corp, today. “Most car owners,” he said, “know ony about ‘the more familiar services such as lubrication and tank-filling. But the job of a reliable service station operator consists of giving his customers complete transportation service. “Modern service station= men, quite unlike the old-time filling station .operators, are equipped to provide. a surprising scope of motoristaiding service, “Tire service, spark plug and ignition service, cooling system attention—these represent just a few of the ways in which station operators can now help motorists get more out of their cars. Get better acquainted with a reliable service station operator because he can help get more and better performance out of your car.”

FISHER RESTYLING | ADDS TO VISIBILITY

Glass Area Is Increased in All ’39 Models.

Increase in glass area totaling as much as 18 per cent feature the new unisteel turret top bodies by Fisher of the 1939 General Motors cars. Windshield and window openings, including even the lowest priced car of the General Motors line, are larger, resulting in an improvement in the range vision afforded the driver and his passengers and add-

ing materially to driving comfort rand safety. enn iE

A reduction in the diameter of the body pillars has been achieved at the same time through the introduction of inbuilt stiffening braces of special “design.

AID TO ENGINEERS

Cathode Ray Is Used in Studying Engines.

Although television broadcasts in a few cities are still at an experimental stage, basic principles of the new science are exerting a growing influence on modern motor car design, : Plymouth engineers, who first employed cathode ray apparatus in acoustical studies for soundproosing recent model cars, now reveal that similar equipment was ased in developing new improvements in the | 1939 engine. : ! Cathode ray tubes, slightly smaller than the latest télevision type, were useful in special studies of flame propagation inside the combustion chambers of this year’s power plant.

SWITCH YOUR TIRES ~ TO GET BEST WEAR

By switching the front tires ol the rear wheels, and vice versa approximately every few thousand miles, you will get the maximum wear from your tires. - The rear tires get the most wear.

WHEN LIGHTS BRIGHTEN,

The 1939 Chevrolets are equipped with a headlamp beam indicator which shows the driver when the upper beam is on. The indicator is a small window above the 50-mile marking on the speedometer, behind which a small lamp lights when the “bright” beam is burning.

Company Enters Low-Priced | Field With a New ‘Series Sixty.’

Three new Oldsmobiles—two Sixes and an Eight—go on display today at the Automobile Show. This year Oldsmobile ‘enters the low-priced field with a six-cylinder car, known as the “Series Sixty,” offered ‘on a wheelbase of 115 inches and an engine of 90 horsepower. In the popular-price field Oldsmobile’s six-cylinder “Series Seventy” engine develops 95 horsepower. The “Seventy” has a wheelbase of 120 inches. On this same wheelbase Oldsmobile’s straight eight “Series Eighty,” is powered by a 110 - horsepower. engine, Broad vision bodies also are a feature of the Oldsmobile “Eighty.” , L. C. Burnett, Indianapolis zone manager for Oldsmobile, d eclares that one of the leading improvements this year is the introduction of “Rhythmic Ride.” A new interpretation of roadability is made possible by quadricoil - springing, four-way stabilization and kneeation wheels. 2

Introduction of Oldsmobile’s handi-shift, in which the conventional shift lever is replaced by a short, horizontal shifting lever located at the side of the steering column, is a contribution to safety. Automatic safety transmission is available as optional equipment. Steering geometry, a feature of all three of the new Oldsmobile, is accomplished by a new hookup employing twin tie-rods of equal length and weight and is designed as “dual center-control steering.” All three Oldsmobiles have a general resemblance. Windshields are the divided type, and are set at an angle to greatly improve the vision and reduce wind resistance. Windshields’ on the “Seventy” and “Eighty” are wide
