Leila Roosevelt Denis
Armand Denis and Leila Roosevelt Denis, explorers who have to their credit the complete encircling of the globe by automobile and the traversing of the whole of Africa by automobile and truck, will be in Indianapolis Tuesday to speak at the Universal Club's luncheon and to make an appearance at the Indianapolis Automobile Show Tuesday evening.
On their last expedition, to the Belgian Congo to make the picture “Dark Rapture,” Mr. and Mrs. Denis drove from the Straits of Gibraltar across the Sahara desert and equatorial Africa to the East Coast—and back, in a standard American sedan and two four-wheel drive trucks of the type made for the American Army. :
BM. PRESENTS DIESEL TRUCKS
1939 Models More Massive; ‘New Cabs Are Larger And Safer.
GMC factory-built overhead valve engines, syncro-mesh transmissions for medium and heavy-duty models and 10 new GMC Diesel trucks are included in the.line of new motor trucks announced by General Motors Truck & Coach for 1939. Presenting an ultra-modern appearance which. follows the trend started by GMC two years ago, the 1939 trucks are more massive and nfore powerful. The new .cabs on all light-duty
models are larger, roomier and safer; they all have V-shape windshields. The proper combination of power and utility is suggested by the rounded streamlined cab which blends with the over-all design to result in GMC'’s distinctive appearance, Less Cost Claimed
More power, at less cost to the operator, is claimed through highcompression ~ engines. The compression ratio increase average 20 per cent—making for greater fuel economy and lower operation cost. An improvement in heavy-duty truck operation is GMC’s heavyduty five-speed syncro-mesh transmissions, which are standard equipment or available on medium and
heavy-duty models. The new Diesel models—five conventional and five cab-over-engine models especially designed for the medium and heavy-duty truck field —are announced. In two-cycle engines every downward stroke of the piston is a power stroke, therefore the two-cycle type Diesel has twice as many power
strokes per revolution as the con-
. ventional four-cycle engine.

CAR IS ADDED TOPONTIAGLINE
Two Sixes and. and an Eight Round Out Series; Prices Reduced.
Pontiac's three lines of cars for
: [1939—the Quality Six, De Luxe Six : land De Luxe Eight—all are at the
Auto Show. Lee ,R. Blanchard, Pontiac factory representative, said today that all prices are lower than the corresponding models of last year. With remote control safety gear shift as standard equipment on all the new models, Quality Six prices have been reduced as much as $80 bhelow Pontiac's lowest priced corresponding models of last year, while De Luxe prices are from $30 to $35 below last year. De Luxe Eight prices range : from $10 to $40 Mr. Blanchard below last year’s Eight, but, considering that certain accessories, such as dual tail lights, horns, visors, etc., now are included in -the list price, the actual reduction to buyers amounts to as much as $32.25 up to $62.25. The Quality Six, which is new to the line, is designed for large production and is the lowest priced. There are five models — two and four-door sedans, business and sport coupes and station wagon—of 190 inches overall length. The De Luxe Six, with the same engine but longer chassis than the Quality Six, also comes in five bodies. A cabriolet, two coupes and two sedans constitute the line. Overall length of 196% inches makes it the longest Six by four inches Pontiac has ever built. The De Lixe Eight, with its famous smooth running and economical straight eight engine, embraces the same body styles as the De Luxe Six. : Vision Increased
Increased visibility for driver and passengers alike is an added safety factor. In the De Luxe Six and Eight models visibility is fully 25 per cent greater than in previous models, Windshield and window glass are wider and higher. Windshield corner posts are narrower. Cowl-line is lower and the radii of upper windshield corners are shorter, thus enlarging the vision all around. A single panel rear window in all models also adds to the visibility. De Luxe Six and Eight bodies ane wider and lower and are equipped either with or without running boards. Floors being only curbhigh (two inches lower than last year) many people desire to step directly into the car without the use of a running board.
Shift Is Improved
The remote control safety gear shift designed and pioneered last year by Pontiac has been refined and improved and is standard equipment on all 1939 Pontiac models clearing the front compartment for three passengers. A booster spring has been added which supplies up to 50 per cent of the effort required to shift gears. Another improvement is an adjustment which permits setting the shift lever to suit the reach of the driver. Spare tires are placed upright against the back of the rear seats, the shelves removed from the trunks, thus providing a larger amount of useful trunk space. Knee action has been refined by the use of lighter and stronger pressed steel arms which make possible an inch greater road clear-

by- the distributors “auto-poise con-
trol” employs a positive, active mechanical force to hold the car in a straight line of travel at all times resulting in a fundamental improvement in “ride,” driving ease and
sureness of control.
New Seat Cushioning
The adaptation of “airfoam” seat cushions to multiple coil seat spring construction is also a Hudson development. Airfoam cushions are made from the pure milk of the rubber tree brought to this country in its natural state. In manu-
facture, air is beaten into it until it|}
turns to foam; then it is moulded into cushions. Interior of the new Hudson 118inch wheelbase Six present a different style note.” They are upholstered in a new taupe material of diamond weave, with chrometrimmed rear arm rests. Form-fitting seats are adjustable over a four-inch range. In the 1939 Hudson Country Club series, Hudson presents new upholstery design. The sixes show two shades of taupe ashmere cloth combined in a modern diagonal design. The eights have their own new matching colors and chromium. Features for 1939 are Hudson's hydraulic “double-safe” brakes which incorporate a separate mechanical reserve system operating from .the same brake pedal, always ready to come into use automatically if, through carelessness or accident, the hydraulic brakes are inoperative; steel bodies, roofs and floors; radial safety control; wide windshield wvision; high power-to-weight ratio, and steel running boards. Added for 1939 are Hudson's new dash-loeking safety hood, hinged at the front; a new headlight beam indicator; automatic push-button

POWER TO LINE
Gear Shift Is. on Steering Column; New Type of Overdrive Used.
Chrysler’s 1939 line is featured by a complete change in design, increased horsepower, a steering-col-umn gear shift, new type of overdrive transmission, greater roominess. C. H. Wallerich, president of C. H. Wallerich Co., Chrysler distributor here, has announced that the company again is offering three lines, designated as the Royal, Imperial and Cus‘tom = Imperial. All have the same exterior appearance and essentially the same fundamental new features. The outstanding characteristic of the line is its modernity. ; The wheelbase Mr. Wallerich of the 100-horse-power Royal is 119 inches, of the 135 horsepower Imperial 125 inches, and of the Custoin Imperial, 144 inches. :* Royal and Imperial come in four body styles—four-door sedan, twodoor sedan (brougham), coupe and Victoria coupe. The latter is fitted with two auxiliary seats. The Custom Imperial comes in five-passenger sedan, seven-passen-ger sedan and sedan-limousine body styles. ‘The gear shift lever has been taken off the floor and moved to the steering column on. all the new Chryslers. ‘There is nothing new to learn, as the various shifts are made exactly as before, except in a vertical instead of a horizontal plane. The hand brake has, been moved to the left side of the driver under the dash, leaving the front compartment with a level and unob-
structed floor that makes it possible
In Five Distinct Body Types
Five body types—the coupe, five-. passenger touring coupe, touring ‘sedan, convertible coupe and con. vertible sedan—gre presented at’ the auto show by La Salle through. C. M. Hammond and E. R. Linde-
‘|smith, heads of the Hoosier Cadil-
lac Co., distributors ih Trdisnapolis and Indiana. The dominant’ note in the effect of flowing lines and fleetness is an extremely nar- § row radiator grille that has been made possible only by taking additional a ir through the diecast grilles locatol on ie inner aces of the front fenders. ‘Mr. Hammond As a radical departure, and due to the fact that bodies are unusually low, running boards are optional at no extra cost. When removed, stainless steel strips are added below the doors. The new bodies register in safer operation. Visibility has been in-
for three persons to ride om the front seat in complete comfort. One of the most important advances in the 1939 line is the introduction of an improved type of transmission, termed the “cruise and climb.” In general principle this transmission is similar to the overdrive previously used in Chrysler cars, but it is more valuable to the average driver in that it cuts in at speeds of from 23 to 28 miles an hour, instead of above 40. A new type of safety speedometer will contribute to driving safety. The indicator is illuminated when instrument lights are on. From a stand-still to 30 miles an hour—the legal speed in most city driving— the light shows green. From 30 to 50 miles it is amber and at 50 it changes to a brilliant red. Horsepower of the Royal has been raised to 100 by means of an increase .in compression ration from 6.2. to 6.5 and an improvement in manifolding and carbureting. Bore and stroke remain the same as last year, 3% to 4%, with a piston dis-
placement of 241.5 cubic inches.
creased by esper windshields and windows and narrower body pillars. There is an actual improvement of 27 per cent in glass area over last year’s models. The curve of the hood line further reduces the obstruction to driving vision. The La Salle carries the “sunshine turret top” as an optional feature on ‘the touring coupe and sedan. The innovation, which is expected
