SLIDING TOP IS AMONG CURRENT BUICK FEATURES
Car Being Presented Here in Four Lines, Says C. A. Dickens.
New in styling and redesigned in major chassis detail, four lines of Buick’ motor cars for 1939 make their bow at the Automobile Show. They are the Series 40 Special, on & 120-inch wheel base; the Series 60 Century, with a wheel base of 126 inches; the Series 80 Roadmaster, with 133-inch wheel base, and Beries 90 Limited, with a wheel base of 140 inches. According to C. A. Dickens, I n dianapolis zone manager, the four lines, ranging in price from $894 to $2453, cover the price fields in which Buick has operated during the last four years. The new prices, he said, represent reductions under 1938 and return this year’s Buick prices to approximately 1936 levels. Developments in the Buick chassis design have resulted in materially lowering the car, thus contributing to the lower and longer ‘lines of the new models, while materially improving riding qualities and stability. Contributing greatly to the striking appearance of the car

is the adoption of “cat-walk” cool-!
ing. With this construction the grilles are set in rakish contour in the cat-walk section of the front end, bringing them lower and resulting in better streamlining. At the same time this construction brings air to the radiator at greater . pressure, thus promoting cooling efficiency and permitting a narrower hood for better driving vision.
Clears Front Compartment
Buick’s “handi-shift” remote control gear shift will be found on all models. The shifter lever with this type control is placed under the steering wheel, thus clearing the front compartment. -- There is a new direction signal which flashes a warning and indicates the direction of a turn, a safety ignition switch, fatigue-free accelerator, legible instruments, and numerous accessory refinements.
On the Series 40 and 60 cars, due |
to the new design, the floor is almost two inches lower, and yet there is no tunnel or other obstruction in the floor surface. All body joints are welded, and as a result the entire structure is converted into what is essentially a single unit. On the Series 40 and 60 cars “stream boards” may be had in place of running boards as optional equipment. Another new feature is the “sunshine turret top,” which is available on all sedans of both the Series 40 and Series 60 models,
Sliding Top Is New
The new sliding top provides sun advantages for closed cars which hitherto have been possible only in an open car. The roof panel slides
back providing this vision upward. - It is dripproof and rainproof. Buick’s new direction signal is a built-in device. The indicator lamp is mounted in the center of the. luggage compartment door at the rear and combines an identifying pame plate with the usefulness of a safety feature. When the driver wishes to indicate a turn he flips a switch mounted on the “handi-shift” lever on the steering column, without removing his hand from the steering wheel. This illuminates a modified w in either end of the lamp, depending on whether the turn is to fu right or to the left.
4 107 H. P. in Series 40
The Dynaflash engines, valve-in-head straight eight type, have been improved in many details of design. The engine, which permits higher compression without detonation, but with greater power and performance, is provided in two sizes. On the Series 40 the motor develops 107 horsepower at 3400 r. p. m. On Series 60, 80 and 90 the motor develops 141 horsepower at 3600 r. p. m.
Improvements in the motor in-
clude a new fuel conditioner with new carburetcr, choke, air cleaner and new manifold; new water pump bearings, sealed and lubricated for life; new engine mountings and other detailed changes. The torque-free coil rear springing is retained with improvements which provide added stability. Improvements also have been made in the independent front wheel suspension, which also employs coil springs.

BUILT-IN TRUNKS ON ALL OLDS SEDANS
All sedari~models in the Oldsmobile series offer built-in trunks of generous size. The exterior beauty of Oldsmobile sedan models is further emphasized by this rear styling treatment. Inside the trunk the spare tire and wheel is placed vertically instead of horizontally to permit easier loading
and unloading. ‘Another advantage to facilitate handling of luggage is obtained by lowering the trunk floor to a point even with the top of the rear ‘bumper.
A CAR’S LIFE EXPECTANCY The average life-expectancy of a new car is nearly nine years; in 1926 it was six years.

rived from petroleum, was used in the manufacture of tires. This substance makes the tires tough and adds thousands of miles to their life.
POPS WHEN IT’S HOT
On the new 1939 Buick there is a cigar lighter which pops out of contact when hot. This eliminates the necessity for driving with one hand for a contracted period while manipulating the lighter.

Litzelman & Morrison, Inc., Marion County distributors, today announced the addition of a new Overland car to the Willys line. Th enew car presents an advance along the general line of construction featured by the manufacturer during the last two years, and is larger than the Willys line, bringing the production of the company

announcement, The new Cverland introduces a newly developed slip-stream design incorporating light but strong structural design. The Overland engine develops 61-horsepower. In appearance the Overland slipstream body is marked by a devel-
apmient of streamlining accentuate by a hood which bears a resem. blance to the front of a mode transport : airliner. Ventilating louvres are carried at the front o the hood and in the aprons be; tween the fenders.
A type of headlight centered in the fenders on an eyeball mounting conforms with the general body contours. The wheelbase is longer than on the Willys. In mechanical speci fications new features of design are presented. Hydraulic brakes are standard equipment on all models. The emergency brake, mechanical in type, is located under the instru: ment panel at the left of the drive Developments in the design of the motor include the use of ligh weight, aluminum, electroplated pis tons; a new type silent camshaft, close-fitting valve parts with a hig valve spring tension and a valv spring dampener. ~The general effect of the engi neering has been to develop in ncreased horsepower from the cylin der dimensions which insure lo fuel consumption. Maximum powe development is 61-horsepower. In the chassis construction the K-X type of chassis reinforcement. is employed, the “K” member bes ing at the front end of the frame and the “X” member midway of the frame.
