TYLED, AIR-CONDITIONED

New Engine Is Put Into _Lower-Priced Series 0f Cars.

All the 1939 Nash cars have been restyled from bumper to bumper. The new body and hood linés and the slenderizing treatment of the front-end give them a longer, lower, and -racier appearance. One of the new features is the “Weather Eye” conditioned air system for winter driving, an advancement of the car comfort system. am Another important advance is the super-pow-ered engine of the Nash - Lafayette, . the lowpriced series of cars, It has many parts less . than conventional automobile power plants. It is made up of two major parts—engine block and engine head. The intake manifolding is cast into the engine block. It is an L-head type

motor and dual jet carburetion is used.

The new engine design is so much more efficient and trouble free, according to Dewey Lewis and Lewis Winkler, heads of Lewis & Winkler Motors, Inc., Indianapolis Nash distributors, that operating economy is 10 per cent better than last year. The simplified type of sealed manifold motor also is used in the Nash medium priced cars—the Ambassador Six and: Ambassador Eight — but these sixes and eights are

as they were last year. The Six has 105 and the - Eight: 115 horse power. A remote -ontrol gear shifter, located on the steering column, is optional on all series of cars. Car soundproofing, on which Nash and Kelvinator engineers have been working for two years, takes a new meaning, report the local distributors. Advances in the usage of Nash-Kelvinator’s “Sand Mortex” provide a much quieter car interior, they declare.

Objectionable noise from wind roar, motor hum and traffic din are blotted out by this type of insulation. The new body design gave Nash engineers an opportunity to widen bodies as much as four inches. Both front and rear seats offer plenty of room for three passengers. Windshield vision has been increased through increases in width: and height and by the pitch of the! “glass. The all-steel hood is of the “alligator” type, but offers the feature of being counterbalanced. A safety point is in an automatic catch on the front which prevents the hood from being forced open by the wind if it has not been properly locked by service station attendants.

Easy-to-Read Instruments

A new safety instrument panel has been developed. The angle of the panel and the location of the instruments make it possible to read the dials at a glance. The speedometer is a ribbon type with all speed markings on a horizontal e. An automatic tuning radio ts into the panel. The speaker is located behind an attractive chrome e in the.center of the instruent panel. : The Nash cruising gear, the equivent of an automatic fourth speed ~ forward, is standard equipment on the Ambassador Eight and availle as an option on all models.

Five Reasons For Better Days Cited

D. E. Ahrens, general sales manager of Cadillac-La Salle, today declared that “I believe the automobile business will be better in 1939. This is not an idle statement. It is based on concrete factors pointing toward definite improvement. “They are: “1. Early fall business indices exhibit an upward trend * where a decline had set in a year ago. “2. The relatively small volume of automobiles sold this year will not cover the 2,200,000 old cars that normally go out of service annually. “3. The low ebb of dealer new car stocks. At the beginning of new model production averages, showed less than one 1937 car per Cadillac= La Salle dealer. “4, The healthy condition of used car stocks. The industry has done a constructive job in moving used cars. As a generality dealers enter the new model year unburdened by heavy inventories. . “5. The 1939 cars themselves.”

PACKARD EXPLAINS THE ‘FOURTH SPEED’

Econo-Drive Operates at Over 30 M.-P. H.

/

The new Packard Econo-Drive, available as added equipment on the Packard Six, 120 and Super Eight, give a “fourth .speed” or cruising gear ratio at car speeds more than 30 ‘miles an hour. Engine speed is said to be reduced 27.8 per cent by the device, resulting in a saving of gasoline and oil as well as a reduction in engine wear. When a car has reached a speed of 30 miles an hour or more, Packard engineers explain, Econo-Drive is brought into operation simply by lifting the foot on the accelerator pedal. Return to third speed for

‘quick acceleration is instantaneous

when the accelerator * pedal is pressed down slightly beyond the full throttle position. Full range of accelerator control then may be had without a return to Econo-Drive. Fourth speed can be returned by taking the foot from the accelerator momentarily. The new Econo-Drive may be locked in or out of operation through movement of a control knob conveniently located below the instrument panel.

GAS AND OIL-50 TO 1

For every 50 gallons of gasoline, one gallon of oil is used in the crankcase, and for every 100 gallons of gasoline, a little more than a pound of grease is used.

AUTO INDUSTRY LAUDEDBY FOY

| Manufacturers Won’t Stand

Still, Declares De Soto President.

America’s interest in the annual automobile shows is a tribute to this country’s appreciation of the ingenuity and progress of the automo-

|bile industry, declared Byron C. Foy,

president of De Soto, today. “During the last 20 years most industries in this country have made tremendous strides. The automobile

business has been unique, however, in that during this period it has changed the transportation habits of the world—and the buying habits, too,” he said. “The key to the growth of the automobile industry lies in the fact tha it has never stood still. “The history of the business has been a history of men with imagination ‘and foresight—men who have constantly given the public improved products each year at prices that people can afford to pay.

Years of Research

“Research and new product development never stops in the automobile industry. Sometimes it takes years before a new device reaches the required perfection for inclusion on a new model.

“This research and behind-the-scenes activity in the great automobile plants of Detroit reaches its climax each year at the automobile shows. “The public has grown to expect new and better cars each year. To justify this confidence the industry not only spends many millions in research annually but also invests a substantial fortune in new tools and equipment to build its new models. . “Our 1939 De Soto cars, for example, represent the expenditure of millions of dollars as part of the Chrysler Corporation’s $15,000,000 program for new dies and equipment. “The automobile shows thus take on a significance that goes even beyond: new car styles and engineering advances when you realize the importance of the industry and its new. car models to American economic life. “New cars stimulate new buyers. Everybody wants to be up to date. The automobile is such an important part of our daily lives that all of us want to enjoy the advantages in style, comfort, safety and engineering that the industry presents each year.” }
