La Guardia Has Disdain . For Decorum.

L_By GEORGE ROSS

YORK, Nov. 18 —Elections,| m

Martian nightmares and gangsters may come and go, but Mayor

La Guardia—the gentleman with] the 10-gallon hat and the: five-|

borough boots—seems to be becoming a Gotham perennial. Certainly no other chief executive of the Nation's largest metropolis has done his job with as much peppery vigor and such complete disdain for diplomatic decorum.

: Mayor La Guardia lives in a modest domicile at 108th St., near Madison Ave, The neighborhood borders on the fringe of sepia Harlem, far removed from the town’s more patrician residential sectors. The Mayor’s family life is the exact opposite of his wild, breathless workaday existence. His two children attend public school, and only occasionally are treated to an excursion with papa among the municipal go-ings-on of the City. "Mrs. La Guardia maintains the family homestead with the aid of . one servant, and does all the shop-

Ding Mayor himself packs more activity into a day’s toil than most other human beings in the City. He rises at 6 a. m. and generally is off to the office by 6:30—but not without first of all paying a few surprise visits to unsuspecting and out-of-the way police precincts and fire stations. And woe unto the hapless gendarme caught without a shave, or fire-battalion chief with an unpolished hose-nozzle at that hour of the morning! ; = ” ”

N average day’s calendar would include a swift dash to the public market place in the Bronx plus a personal inspection of the scales by the Mayor to see that Mrs. New Yorker is getting the proper ratio per pound of cauliflower, carrots and chestnuts. En route downtown, it’s a cinch that two or three schools, plus a few hospitals, would experience a hasty but thorough going-over by an already panting mayoral entourage. If there is an ‘important City Hall appointment on the day’s calendar by 11 a. m, attaches in the City’s municipal stronghold will tell you the Mayor’s entrance will be timed for 10:59 a. m—but not a split second later. Mayor La Guardia is no James J. Walker. Sartorially, he’s a shambles. The town rarely has seen him in anything but a pretty well-worn, unpressed blue serge suit, a pair of brown brogans and that Gargantuan, jet-black funereal bonnet. If it’s evening attire, His Honor’s tie assumes an acute angle through sheer force of habit and the con-

tinuous animation of chin and}

neck above. The Mayor’s desk is a crazy conglomeration of wild disorder—official. papers being thrust upon it with a sundry collection of pipe tobacco, municip, og scrolls, dozens of complimentary *tickets to various public affairs, blueprints for a half dozen new playgrounds and a sample wastebasket to be purchased in quantities for City clerical departments. An even half-dozen secretaries and office assistants whirl in and out of the official sanctum constantly. 2 2 2 HE Mayor, in transit, whips up and down the City streets in a bright red de luxe gasoline chariot that has every conceivable motor accessory hung from its sides but —a siren. He doesn’t think the nerve-shattering screech of a siren on his own car worth the incon- | venience that it might cause some of the citizenry. And it was upon| ‘the Mayor’s orders recently that a! City-wide edict was issued prohib‘iting fire engines, police cars and ambulances to turn on the ear-| splitting din except when answer-! ing an emergency call. He has a police short-wave receiver in his auto—and also in the executive offices down at City Hall. ‘A major fire, calamity or public excitement of any type finds Mr. La Guardia’s bustling figure surging through the crowds—no matter what the hour, weather or location.
