Williams Is
‘Riding With
Old Harvard
Fes Not Sure Who Yale Has
For Coach, Ducky Pond Or Greasy Neale.
By JOE WILLIAMS Times Specigl Writer
NEW YORK, Nov. 18.—The Yales and the Harvards meet in their traditional holy of hdlies in the Bowl tomorrow. Usually you can throw the dope book out the window when these old rivals meet. But this does not seem to be one of ‘those years. The 'Yales have been improving like German culture. They have
been going from bad to worse. They| :
dropped their fifth game of the season to Princeton last week. All they brought into the ‘game was a traditional background and the cusofary amount of ‘ivy. In short,
y looked pretty terrible. "Meanwhile, the Harvards, under
{the competent coaching of Dick * Harlow, have: been moving up steadily since the second game of the season. They gave Army a fierce hand-to-hand battle, almost beat Dartmouth and gave Princeton a nice going over. They have one of the best drilled and fastest charging lines in ‘the East. It is hard to see how they can miss.
Blue Lacks a Star Performer
Tt may or may not be significant that the Yales haven't a really stand-out player this season, a Larry Kelley or a Clint Frank. The . Ducky Pond-Greasy Neale coaching combination appears to need a performer to get results. The combination stresses individualism, or at least seems to, and when. there is no individual around capable of carrying burdens, the Pond-Neale fermula doesn’t produce spectacular returns. ‘We never have been able to find out for sure whether Mr, Pond or = Neale is’ the head coach at ale. From time to time we hear of. rumoréd conflict betwéen the two but since the said rumors always defied verification we| ignored them. Anyway, Mr. Pond| is certainly the spokesman for the squad, and in this capacity he tells the press there is only one game on the schedule that means anything to the Yales, and that is the [Harvary game.
That ‘Big Three’ | Title at Stake |
Offhand, this might be interpreted as a snub to Columbia, Penn, Navy, etc., but we don’t believe Mr. Pond meant it that way. It happens to be that if the Yales can beat the Harvards they consider the season a success, and this undoubtedly goes for the other side, too, We suppose you must be either an|Old Blue or an Old Crimson to understand this peculiar sort of football psy-
. chology.
If the Harvards win the game— and Asa Bushnell should investigate them if they don't—they will have themselves another Big Three championship. This isn’t] worth a quarter in the widespread national scheme of football but it means a lot to the devoted supporters of the blessed trinity.

The bowling honor count list swelled to 50 members today hut ‘almost half of that number sneaked in with scores under the 615 mark. After Wednesday’s heavy artillery, the totals last night were about as powerful as a. salvo of popguns. Topping the list was Powers of the Universal League rolling at Pritch-
ett's. A top-heavy 254 final roll and a good 235 gave him the first position after he had opened with an ordinary 170. Two pins back came Jack Thibodeau of the Real Silk squad-in the Sturm Recreation loop. Jack was more , consistent than Powers but didn’t match the latter's 235. Thibo-~ deau had counts of 200, 223 and 234. The team scores fell for the third time this week to 2900 plus levels. The Heindenreich Florists of the| Universal loop at the Pritchett lanes scored a 2976 with Gardner's 616 pacing the group. McCann hit at 595, Hockersmith a 592, Rudbeck a 587 nad Allen a 586.
