C1. 0. AVOIDS 3D-TERM STAND; HAGUE IS BOOED
Texas Wanted Dies to Be New Huey, Not Another Hitler, Delegate Says.
PITTSBURGH, Nov. 17 (U. P.).— An attempt by a delegate to place the convention of the Congress of Industrial Organizations on record indorsing a third term for President Roosevelt and praising the New Deal, was sidetracked quickly today by
C. I. O. leaders. : The convention was assured by
Lee Pressman, C. I. O. counsel and|
resolutions committee head, that a measure dealing with the Administration and other political subjects would be submitted. A few minutes earlier Chairman Martin Dies (D. Tex.) of the House Committee Investigating un-Ameri-can Activities and Mayor Frank (“I-am-the-law”) Hague of Jersey City, N. J, were booed and hissed by delegates. Calls Hague ‘Dictator’
The incident occurred-as the con? vention shouted its approval of resolutions demanding legislation against strike-breaking activity, a ban on child labor, establishment of a petmanent Congressional committee to investigate violations of civil liberties and other reforms affecting labor. A resolution calling’ on the Federal Government to deny financial aid to all states in which workers’ rights are violated was adopted quickly after W. J. Carney, C. I. O. regional ‘director of New Jersey, attacked Hague as a “dictator.” “If we do not co-operate to stop the Hagues, their rule will spread to other states.” J. E. Crossland, chairman of the
C. I. O. Industrial Union Council of Texas, told the delegates that Texas is “ashamed of Dies” and “apologizes for this man.” The mere mention of the blond Texan's name brought hisses, boos and yells of derision. ‘Texas Is Ashamed’
“We elected this man in Texas because he looked young, virile and we thought he’d be another Huey Long—not another Hitler, or worse,” Mr. Crossland shouted above the din. “We were wrong. He has converted his committee into a
bludgeon to kill off friends of labor. He wilfully continues to spend public money in despicable relations with spies and stooges. Texas is ashamed of the orgy of perjury and vituperation that he has made.” Resolutions adopted today embraced: Demandg for banning Federal funds to states wherein civil liberties are violated. A call for legislation to prevent
use of National Guardsmen to break |}
strikes. An indorsemient of New Deal measures dealing with the nation’s youth.
An appeal to all C. I. O. unions to |
unite in forcing ratification of the Child Labor Amendment to the Constitution.
Seek Betierment of South
A demand for Federal legislation outlawing industrial espionage and
spy-strike agencies. A demand for legislation which will “obtain the economic and political improvement of working and farming masses of the South.” Strong indorsement of President Roosevelt’s national health program, A demand for “adequate” labor representation on all Government agencies touching the lives of workers. A series of Social security proposals calling for additional Federal aid to the aged, needy, blind, handicapped and widows and dependent children; support for health co-operatives and expansion of social security protection to include all citizens. e
Uphold Contracts
The convention sought twice yesterday to assure employers that C.
stitution, adopted in 87 mintes, embraced as one of its four objectives the “determined maintenance to obligations and responsibilities under collective bargaining and wage agreements.” Later, the delegates took official cognizance of criticism directed at the C. I. O. during the past three years for alleged violations of contractural relations, by adopting a resolution that strict observance of
contracts was equally important to|§ labor and industry and that “it 1s|§
the unshakable policy of the C. I. O. and its affiliates to adhere to their contractural obligations in _ letter and in spirit.”
