WHEAT STEADY, CORN HIGHER IN LIGHT TRADING

Little Stimulus to Market; Traders Await News: of Trade Treaty.

X CHICAGO, Nov. 17 ¢U. P).— Wheat prices ruled steady after an irregular opening on the Chicago Board of Trade today. General trading interest was small. At the end of the first hour wheat was up % to % cent, corn up % cent, and oats unchanged to 1% cent

higher. There was little in the news to

: stimulate activity on either the buy-

ing or selling side in wheat, and most traders in North American and Liverpool markets were inclined to await the terms of the Anglo-

»| American trade treaty to be signed

today. Liverpool wheat firmed in late trading to close unchanged to 3% cent highe¥, the latter for the December delivery. Earlier prices were lower on large Balkan shipments and lower aCnadian offers. Winnipeg wheat held about steady in a slow trade. Only scattered lots of aMnitobas were sold for export. Foreign advices reported that negotiations are under way for the

dom. : The United Kingdom today

+|purchased a cargo of Australian

wheat. Argentine crop reports indicate

+ | little frost damage and some bene-

ficial rains in the Pampa province. The United States forecast was for + unsettled weather over much of the

A wheat balt.

Corn prices were steady under light local buying. Market interest Local receipts were estimated at 299 cars of corn and 35

* cars of wheat.

STATES URGED T0 BE MEMBERS OF OIL COMPACT

Byles Addresses Convention Of Petroleum Body At Chicago.

CHICAGO, Nov. 17 (U. P.).—The American Petroleum Institute has called upon Federal and State authorities to continue operation of the Interstate Oil Compact as a means of widening and improving “the usefulness of petroleum conservation.” Addressing the opening meeting of the Institute’s 19th annual convention, Axtell J. Byles, president, recommended that all oil-producing states assume membership in the compact, declaring that he could see no reason “why any producing state which desires to serve the general interests and safeguard its own should hesitate to join and sit at the conference table.” Conservation, Axtell said, means production of the maximum amount lof crude oil from a pool at the least possible cost, as well as prevention ‘of waste, but not fixed prices or the fixing of prices. “This industry has no right to special price consideration other ‘than that necessary to prevent ‘physical waste,” he asserted. “Under proper conservation practices, much narrower swings in the price {trend are likely to occur than were experienced prior to production under proration.” The industry, he said, looks forward “to. an improved position in 1939, provided it escapes the burden of uneconomic ‘inventories by the end of March.”

FARMERS DISSATISFIED

NEW YORK, Nov. 17 (U. P.).— Farmer dissatisfaction with the AAA program continues to spread, according to reports from Dallas. A series of protest meetings have been announced prior to the Dec. 10 referendum on-the cotton quota system. With the trade expecting around four million bales to go into the loan, it has been pointed out that a continued rise in price would obviously cause a revision in this estimate, although present prices have failed to sidetrack a noticeable amount of cotton from the loan to

|| trade channels.

It is likely the King and Queen of England won't be able to look a microphone in the face when they return from their historymaking. trip to the United States next - summer. First announcement of radio coverage of their visit came today from NBC, which already is planning to cover the royal couple's departure from England, their arrival and their activities here. ‘A multiplicity of microphones can give rise to embarrassing situations, as you who remember the Lindbergh incident well know. Shortly after the Lindberghs were married, they landed at a New York airport and were met by an aisle of microphones. The crowd at a distance could see the flier talking earnestly to his wife. who stayed at home by the radio could hear him reprimanding her for not wearing a petticoat.
