mace . V r. Cohan * Does His Bit \ As Trouper

7 Forgets lliness to Perform “In Brilliant Fashion;

Audience Cool.

By JAMES THRASHER

When you use the word “trouper” you take your reputation in your own hands. For the poor slang description has been tossed around, in and out of the theater, until its user is classed with those who go

sentimental about mother-love and dear old Siwash. Nevertheless, there is a bit of trouping being done at English’s this week-end by George M. Cohan

and it lives up to all that the word

originally implied. Mr. Cohan opened here last night in his now-famous role of President Roosevelt in “I'd Rather Be Right.” And he worked under hardships

of his younger colleagues. eran of 60-odd years admitted having the grippe. There were few of his speeches that weren't punctuated by a cough. Yet, though his still agile bones were aching, he gave a performance of vitality and youthfulness and bubbling humor .that was a joy to see.

Chills Are Banished

When he gave his hat a tiit and his cane a spin and went into nis dance, years and discomfort seemed to disappear. He was the youngest person on the stage. And he stirred to enthusiasm an audience which was unaccountably cold. All this is saying nothing about “I'd Rather Be Right,” which is what the piece started out to do. Because Mr. Cohan has been zonsidered first doesn’t mean that he is the whole show. It is an immensely clever satire, light-hearted but not bitter. Everyone, judging from the advance ticket sale, knows what to expect: Mr. Cohan, as the President, appears in a dream to a young couple in Central Park who can’t get married because the boss won't give the boy a- raise until the budget is balanced. Not only does the Presidenu appear, but his Cabinet, and the Supreme Court, Federal Theater and PWA workers, the

taken for a merry ride. President says, “Cummings, take a law,” the Supreme Court members pop out from behind the rocks. The President says, “McIntyre, bring me; a fireside,” and fireplace and micro-| phone appear. The Cabinet hashes over the possibilities of revenue. The satirical barbs fly fast when Mr. Cohan sings his delicious “Off the Record.” ‘You'll see few funnier things in any season than Mr. Cohan'’s clarification of the Wagner Act for a pair of Italian merry-go-round virtuosi, or Taylor Holmes, as Secretary Morgenthau, singing “A Baby Bond for Baby’—and few more heart-warm-ing spectacles than those two grand Cohan dances that close the two a

“hard to reconcile with the lethargic

reception the show received last|

night. For it is a good show, I'm sure of that. Perhaps the audience had heard the best jokes of George 8. Kaufman and Moss Hart, or the best songs of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, too often in advance. Perhaps one political faith was too elated by the recent election to revel in the satire, and the other too shocked by it and a fancied disrespect of the country’s highest office to be amused. At any rate, some of the wittiest moments won scarcely more than polite titters.

Other Performances Good

There is no mean, intentional disrespect intended, I am certain. And rather than being shocked, it seems . better that we might thank Heaven, «and seriously, that we're in a country where freedom of expression, respect for strength and tolerance of

weakness, and general good feeling] |

allow “I'd Rather Be Right” to wax prosperous and popular. For the record it should be noted that Mr. Holmes gives a performance scarcely second to Mr. Cohan'’s. That the rest of the cast is topnotch through. That Georgie Tapps’ tap-dancing is something to see. That the chorus girls are uncommonly attractive. That the musical gcore is smart and lilting. There is little point, unfortunately, in urging you to see it. Most of the lucky ticket-holders made up their minds to it weeks ago, and acted accordingly. Without the precious pasteboards you probably coudn’t get in with a search warrant.

Five-and-Ten Plot in New Price Range

Story Old, But a Svelte Patsy Kelly Remains A Comedienne.

Babs Hutton may have become the Danish Countess Haugwitz-Re-ventlow, but Hollywood hasn't seemed to notice it. The movie folk still are playing variations of «I Found a Million Dollar Baby in a Five and Ten Cent Store.” Latest of these is called “There Goes My Heart,” Loew’s current attraction. This time the heroine has moved into a higher price bracket and become the heiress to a department store fortune. But once more she revolts against the dreary rut of her life: America, Kuropé, America again; yachts, money, parties—the same old grind. Sd Joan Butterfield sneaks out on Grandpa, a benevolent tyrant, and goes on her own. : Can You Guess?

While detectives look over the country she gets a job in—right!—

; the Butterfield Department Store.

The reporter assigned to cover the disappearance and search dis-

i covers the missing heiress and falls g in love with her.

There is a fight with his editor in which he tears up the story of his discoveries. Then the editor and his staff drop everything, piece together the torn fragments and print it. : ; Meanwhile Joan has been discovered, and Bill the reporter takes her to his island shack. Grandpa finds her there, and the usual bitter misunderstandings about the story ensue. Two friends send fake telegrams from Bill to Joan and Joan to Bill, arranging a meeting at the shack. ‘Then a minister (it’s Harry Langdon, bless him) arrives, and everything is patched up.

Patsy Kelly’s There

The picture offers some excellent comedy by Patsy Kelly, who has gone svelte and streamlined since her last film, but is as funny as ever. Elsewhere the plot is trite and the lines and situations so unimaginative that the cast can do little with them. ; Fredric March, as the reporter, reflects the disappointing material in a weary, hammy performance. Virginia Bruce, as the heiress, dces but “slightly better. Alan Mowbray, Nancy Carroll and Eugene Pallette also are in the cast. The second picture, “Juvenile Court,” features Paul Kelly and Rita

Films to Test Rival of Sonja

HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 11. (U. P.).— A possible rival to Sonja Henie appeared today when Maria Belita, noted European ice skater and ballet dancer arrived in Hollywood. In a bid for the blond Norwegian girl’s movie ice-skating monopoly, Miss Belita was brought here by Norman Shaw, manager of the late Jack Dunn, world’s champion male ice skater who died tragically on the eve of film suceess. 2% Mr. Shaw invited studio heads to a private skating session. Two screen tests were scheduled immediately for Miss Belita. Her socially promine ntand wealthy mother, Mrs. Jepson-Turner of London, accompanied her. :
