Both news writing and appearance " are important in making a newspaper bright and readable, according to Fred L. Kildow, director of the National Scholastic Press Association and member of the department of journalism at the University of Minnesota. Mr. Kildow spoke this morning at a sectional meeting of the National Scholastic Press Association now holding its 17th annual convention in the Clayreol Hotel. More than 1600 high school students and faculty advisers are attending the three-day convention, officials said today.

Hoosier Poet Speaks

Barton Rees Pogue, Hoosier poet, was to speak on “Riding a Hobby” at Hotel Lincoln before the Yearbook Section and Thurman “Dusty” Miller, Wilmington, O., publisher, was to speak on “Folks I Like” at a luncheon. for the Newspaper Section in the Claypool Hotel.

Prof. Charles Kinter, head of the ‘Butler University journalism: department, was to speak on “Newspaper Reading in the Schools” before a session of the National Association of Journalism at 4 p. m. and Miss Mary Harsha of Vincennes was to talk on *Teaching ‘Newspaper Reading.” The N. A Quill and Scroll meeting will be held in the Claypool Hotel under the direction of Miss Ann Bray of Central High School, Evansville, president. In the evening, a convention banquet is scheduled in the Riley Room of the Claypool Hotel -with John White of Tech High School acting as master of ceremonies.
