HELP-A-PAPA’ HOME SERVICE

Cleveland Project Trains Housekeepers for Emergencies.

CLEVELAND, O., Nov. 11 (U. P.). — WPA here has inaugurated a “Help-a-Papa” service for needy families which are deprived temporarily of their mothers because of illness or other causes. Mrs. Janet B. Benedict, WPA supervisor, prefers to call it the “Housekeeping Aid Project.” She said that about 200 housekeeping aids work for the project. They are trained by 12 supervisors. Mrs. Benedict explained how the project operates: “When a mother becomes ill and father is left helpless with a house to manage and children to care for, the project sends one of its aids to the rescue.

Trained for Emergencies

The worker has been taught at the project headquarters how to deal with almost all household emergencies. The headquarters consists of | three rooms furnished, with the fa-| cilities of a typical home. : “The aids learn how to get a bh out of anything they find in the home to which they are sent,” Mrs. Benedict said. “For example, one family may

families have no washing machine and must wash clothes in the cishpan. : “The aids are taught how to make a dishpan as effective as a washing machine,” she said. She added that they learn also how to darn socks, scrub floors, budget meals and teach children to bathe themselves.

Private relief agencies supplied a similar service, but two years ago the demand for the service increased to such an extent that WPA took it over, Formerly, when a mother of a family had to leave the home temporarily, the children often were sent away to other families and dgencies. This sometimes created a social problem in that the children were not happy, the cost of caring for them was high and temporary breaking up of the home led often to a permanent break-up.
