ying Jitterbugs Who ‘Give,’ Steaming Up Goof-Ball’ Argot
NEW YORK, Nov. 11 (U. P.).—Jitterbugs who exhort each other to give to the tune of the “Viper’s Drag” and other such song hits are— whether they know it or care—steaming up the lingo in the manner of

So says David W. Maurer of the®
University of Louisville whose study of underworld argots is published today in American Speech. linguistic quarterly of the Columbia University Press. Through the dance hall, according to Mr. Maurer, much of the jargon of marijuana smokers has passed into the popular vocabulary. “Such recent song hits as ‘Texas Tea Party,’ ‘The Chant of the Weed,” ‘Smokin’ Reefers,” ‘Reefer Man,’ ‘Viper's Drag,’ ‘Viper’s Moan,’ ‘Muggles,’ etc. reflect, in a very thinly disguised manner, the close relationship between drug-aroused sexual desire and popular dance music,” he said. It's Goof-Ball Marijuana and narcotics users “are constantly ‘steaming the lingo up’,” Mr. Mauer said, with the result that their glossaries are always changing. Marijuana, for example, is rea

ferred to variously as fu, goof-hall, hemp, Indian-hay, mezz, mutah, tea, weed, Texas tea and viper’s weed. In the larger narcotics field addicts are designated by such names as “bird-cage hype,” a flop-house dweller who lacks the money to support his habit; ‘“Hooser fiend,” an inexperienced addict; “junk hog,” an over-indulgent user and ‘“smecker.”

The new boats, says the Review, “gre splendid units, combining an exceptionally formidable torpedo armament with "a satisfactory speed ahd reasonable gun power.” The ‘U. S. Navy now possesses 40 new destroyers and 13 flotilla leaders with 36 of both types under construction and 55 more authorized. These: will replace the torpedo-craft flegt of World War days, which at tne close of hostilities was the greatest in the world, but which has since become wholly obsolete. The new type destroyers displace 1500 tons apiece, and the flotilla

leaders 1800 to 1850 tons. Both types were designed for a speed of 37 knots but on trial have exceeded 40. This is equivalent to about 47 land miles per hour, : Main armament of the destroyers consists of 16 21-inch torpedo tubes in four quadruple mounts, two on either beam. For fighting other destroyers and repelling aircraft, they carry four 5-inch dual-pur-pose guns, mounted on. the center line, and a number of machine guns, This is compared to the armament of new British and Japanese destroyers by the Review, to the Jisadvanisge of the latter two naval ypes.
