9:30 The Drikol Refrigeration quintet opened the Capital City basketball league last night on the Dearborn floor with a 27-to-26 victory over the Schwitzer-Cummins Stokols. Kramer led the winners with 10 points. Shutt led the Stokols. The Fashion Cleaner "quintet toppled the Brehob Markets, 39 to 34, after a close contest. Bert Davis, former Butler University performer, led the Cleaner five with 15 tallies. Homer Stull, ex-Southport High star, was outstanding for the Brehob five with 12 points. Led by John Hickey of last year’s Tech team, the Liehr’s Tavern quintet subdued the Furnas Ice Cream five, 34 to 31, in a nip and tuck contest. Hickey tallied 11 points for the Taverns, while Logan Kinett led the Furnas boys. In the last game of the evening the Mt. Jackson Tire & Battery five easily defeated the Lawrence Denzell squad, 40 to 19. Roberson and Rowe, formerly of the Ben Davis High team, led the victors. Fine team work by the winners enabled them to cage close shots.

Gonzaga Coach Takes Prize With Best Tale of ‘Grief.

SPOKANE, Wash, Nov. 10 (U. P.).—~Mike J. Pecarovich, head coach at Gonzaga University, today won $1000 worth of athletic equipment for Gonzaga as first prize in a national “Moan Letter” contest for coaches. The award is made annually by the Athletic Round Table and Pecarovich’s letter was placed first by a majority of 11 sports editors of larger newspapers west of the Mississippi River, The entry pictured Pecarovich as Moan Lowe, coach of Gonzaga at Shanghai. It told of the annual Rice Bowl game with Hongkong, and how, on the final play, an opponent kicked the ball out of sight. But Sling Pigg Hi, Gonzaga star, was ready for the catch. He caught the falling object and was away for 100 yards and the winning score, only to disappear in an explosion that wiped out the stadium. He had caught, Pecarovich wrote, a Japanese bomb.
