cracked out a 643 to pace the squad to a 2913 total. Woirhaye Sr: hit for a 608, Woirhaye Jr. posted a 595, Dunn had a low opening game to rack up a 567 and Gruner-slipped in his middle and final rolls for an even 500.
Wilbur Holle missed the 700 series when he dropped to games of 226 and 223 after opening well with a 235. His 684 was heavy enough, though, fort he second spot in the honor count list.
While McLear’s brilliant 734 was easily the evenings big news, Charles A. Fox of the Western Electric five in the Indiana Bell League had a middle game of 258 for the high single game. Fox, who carries a handicap of 36 pins, had first and third games of 180 and 167 for a fairly good 605 total.
Other keglers matching McLear’s 257 first game were John Murphy of the Optimist loop, who rolled that figure in the third frame, and Henry |; Woirhaye Sr., who exemplified McLear’s feat by opening with that mark. Favorite total seemed to be 643 as four bowlers hit that figure. The only -other rollers to go above the 650 mark were Bill Noffke in the Evangelical circuit with a 654 ~and John Murphy, one pin back, in the Optimist loop. McLear paced an honor count list
of 27 mineralite tossers who were:

Signing of Haney Completes Managerial Roster.
NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (U. P).— The major leagues’ 1939 managerial roster was complete today with the signing of Fred Haney as pilot of the St. Louis Browns. Haney, former infielder with Detroit and Boston in the American and St. Louis in the National, was plucked from the managership of the Toledo Mud Hens in the American Asscciation to take the helm of the Browns. Replacing the deposed Gabby Street, Haney is the fourth new manager to be named since the baseball season ended, and it was the sixth managerial change made since midseason. Gabby Hartnet{ succeeded Charley Grimm of the Chicago Cubs and Del Baker replaced Mickey Cochrane of Detroit’s Tigers before the season ended. Thompson (Doc) Prothro came from Little Rock, Ark., of the Southern Association to the Philadelphia Phillies when Jimmy Wilson was ousted. Shortstop Leo Durocher of Brooklyn was selected to replace Burleigh Grimes with the Dodgers, and Ray Blades stepped from the manager’s job at Rochester in the International League to the vacancy left by Frankie Frisch on the St. Louis Cardinals.
Frick Expects Blades To Do Okay for Cards
NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (U. P)—
League said today he expected Ray Blades to make the St. Louis Caro |dinals an excellent leader. “Blades has a good, long National League record,” Frick said, “and he is a man who has made good as a manager in the minors. He should prove to be a good man for the Cards, and I wish him the best of luck in his new position.”

50 WESTERN UNION BOYS GO ON STRIKE :
Demand Wage-Hour Law Be |": Enforced in Bronx.
NEW YORK, Nov. 8 (U. P.).—Ap-
proximately 50 Western Union messenger boys in the Bronx went on strike today to enforce the new Federal Wages and Hours Act.
Messages were being delivered by
telephone in five of the borough's eight branch offices.
Executive officers of Western
Union declined immediate comment.
The manager at the main Bronx
office said the full force of 20 messengers there was on duty, but that they were not delivering messages because of “fear of violence.”
The strike was in protest against
paying messengers at the pre-law wage rate instead of the prescribed
25-cent hourly minimum. The company is awaiting a Federal ruling on its request for exemption from the wage provisions. Messengers who struck are members of the American Communications Associate, a C. I. O. affiliate. >
