That would, per<haps, once more put her in oppositon to England.
. A Valuable Ally
3 ‘Even if Japan conquers all of «China, her army will be needed to Yepacify” the conquered areas. But ther navy would still be employable selsewhere, because its use is not tnsce-cary for the pacification of ;China. Tn th~ ‘est world war, when the T-rnce and Britain had all do to cope with the Ger- = in the Atlantic, the Medi- - ~nq the North Sea, Japan ~ valuable ally because its = ~~yad the troopships which ' Australians and New Zea- " irc~»s to Europe. + Now in another major war, Britfain will once more need the gallant =2id of her colonies. Once more, a ‘goodly part of her navy will be en.gaged in the Atlantic and European ‘waters, watching the European enemy fizets. If Japan really stands iby: Germany, her navy will attempt »sto- block the sending of Australian and New Zealand troops. That : :alone would transfer part of the «United States’ interest to the Pa- * jeific, . : Might Involve U. S.
-But more important is the possibility that Japan will ape what the Germans did in the last war." In «those war years, on several foccasions, the Germans made_sud- - *den secret dashes across the North Sea to bombard English towns, regardless of whether they were fortified or not. The whole idea was to terrify the people and to keep the British navy guessing. It is not beyond conception that the Japanese ‘might sneak a squadron of swift

For . earlier this year, the President made : 2a ‘speech in Canada in which he “placed the protection of the Monsroe Doctrine over our northern -neighbor and promised that the “United States would not allow any foreign power to harm Canada. _=- That being the case, what would thappen, should Japan—fighting mgainst England—hegin bomberdimént of Canadian cities? LIFE TERM POSSIBLE FOR CHILD'S MATE
Kentucky Miner to Face Hearing Today.
PRESTONSBURG, Ky. Nov. 3 (U. P.).—Fleming . Tackett, 34, a Kentucky back-hills miner, faced preliminary hearing today on a charge resulting from his marriage to a 10-year-old girl. Conviction could net him a possible life term in prison, even death. He came out of hiding in the hills last night and surrendered at the Sheriff's office. He was locked up in the county jai] charged with “rape of a child under 14.” That was an anticlimax to action taken by the State to show the hillfolk that Kentucky will not tolerate child brides. But even as he was being locked up, county authorities at Ashland ordered the arrest of Wilburn Howard, 60, while they investigated charges his bride of last April also was less than 14, the minimum age under Kentucky law that a girl can marry. Howard's wife, Ruth Greech Howard, was instructed to appear before Judge George Bells in Juvenile Court today. "A six-man jury yesterday found Tackett’s bride a delinquent. The jurors ordered her sent to an orphanage at Lyndon.

Cal), a member of the House Ways and Means tax subcommittee, began a series of conferences with Treasury officials and experts of the joint congressional committee on internal revenue taxation. Rep. Buck said that he saw no present reason why taxes should be raised next year. Chairman Harrison (D. Miss.) of the Senate Finance Committee, expressed fear recently that rates must be in-| creased or exemptions lowered unless business picks up materially.
GROSS INCOME TAX ~ ATTACKED IN SUIT

The company said it had paid $1213 in gross income taxes on receipts from out of the state. The suit charged that the State had no constitutional right to tax income from firms out of the state.
