CHAPLIN TO TALK BUT NOT IN ENGLISH
HOLLYWOOD, Oct. 31 (U. P.).— Charlie Chaplin will talk in his next picture, but not.a word will be understandable to the movie audiences, it was reported today. The comedian will be playing the role of a prisoner in a concentration camp. He can’t speak his fellow prisoners language so resorts to his usual expressive gestures and jargon.

solo and two-piano engagements,
‘Mr. Triggs finds time for composition; not only for his shorter works, with which we are familiar already, but for the larger sonata form. A feature of his program tomorrow will be a new sonata, titled
“Prairie” and bearing a “motto”
from a poem by William Vaughn Moody, The sonata is in four movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, Scherzo and Toccata. A Bach transcription and music by the 17th ‘Century Englishmen Purcell and ‘Peerson, and the 18th Century , Italian, Paradies, will open the pro- ¢ gram. Following the sonata, Mr. Triggs will play a Rhapsody and ‘Intermezzo by Brahms, three Debussy pieces and de Falla’s “Ritual Fire Dance.” 2 2 2
Mr. Bernat likewise finds the leisure to indulge a creative talent. One result of this, a Chaconne, is included on his coming recital program. It will be recalled that the Scherzo from his Symphony in G Minor was played by the Indianapolis Symphony two years ago. The rest of his program will include the Praeludium and Allegro ‘by Kreisler (in the style of Pugnani); the Bruch G Minor Concerto, and pieces by Hubay, Lalo, Rode-Thibaud, Schubert and Ries. Mrs. Bernat will be the accompa-

It is always something of a musical event when a pianist schedules the Beethoven Sonata, Opus 111, for public performance. So it is interesting to note that, in addition to the previously announced half-pro-gram of Debussy, Mr. Cramer is to play this work. The Opus 111 is Beethoven's last, and many critics consider, greatest piano sonata. It is a demanding composition, as every pianist knows, taxing both the executant’s technical powers and his perceptive and interpretative abilities. Hence it
©. usually is avoided by younger 8» pianists.
Mr. Cramer has devoted -many years to the sonata’s study and, as a matter of fact, included it on at
¢ least one previous program here.
He played it in Mexico City in 1934, and was praised not only by the press but by Ernest Ansermet, the Swiss conductor, who was in the audience as guest of Carlos Chavez. The pianist’s program Sunday will open with the Bach English Suite in E Minor, and two short pieces by

Admirers of Miss Zorn and her Bach interpretations will be glad to know that this composer will not be neglected in her coming recital. Transcriptions of the chorale preudes, “What Is the World to Me” and “I Call to Thee,” by Rummel and Busoni, respectively, will open the program, to be followed by an

Besides the ‘conventional’ Beethoven and Chopin, Miss Zorn has ‘found room for three of Mendeldelightful and much neglected “Songs Without Words." She has selected “The Joyous Peasant,” “Duetto” and the “Spinning Song.” Also in the novelty line will be a Mazurka by the late Polish -composer Szymanowski. And her program will close with Liapunov’s “Lesghinka,” which stands - with

anapolis Symphony’s viola. section, has taken up her new duties on the Jordan Conservatory faculty. An Indianapolis native, Miss Payne began her study with Hugh McGibney at the Jordan school. She was a scholarship student at the American Conservatory in Chicago, where she received aer bachelor and master of music degrees. The young musician started a business course at Butler, but music prevailed, and she won a violin scholarship with Emil Heermann, the Cincinnati Symphony’s concertmaster. Through Mr. Heermann she met the orchestra’s conductor, Eugene Goossens, who accepted her as a composition pupil. ; Her studies with Mr. Goossens continued in Hollywood in the summer of 1936, and in London the following summer. At his suggestion, she was commissioned to write the musical score for a nature film, “Timberesque.” Her “Fantasy for Strings” was played in a CBS broadcast last season by the Columbia Concert Orchestra.

Nov. 6 Ballet Program Set
'Giselle' and 'Goldfish' Are Mordkin's Choice.
Mikhail Mordkin has selected a program of two numbers to be presented by his Mordkin Ballet at 3 p. m. Sunday, Nov. 6, in the Murat. They are the two-act “Giselle,” with Patricia Bowman and Leon Varkas, and “The Goldfish,” to be danced by Mr. Mordkin, Lucia Chase and Miss Bowman. Other soloists and the corps de ballet will appear in both productions. The first ballet is danced to music by Adolphe Adam, taken from an opera of the same name which the Parisian composer wrote in 1841. The scenario is by Theophile Gautier, after Heine. Mr. Mordkin is the choreographer for both works to be seen here. “The Goldfish” fs a more modern ballet. It is taken from a story of Pushkin, with original music by Nicolai Tcherepnine. In this ballet the local audience will see Mr. Mordkin as the Fisherman, one of his most famous characterizations. The accompany orchestra will be conducted by Mois Zlatin.
