Jacks HA Surprise Winner of Cornhusking T ile: 40 and ‘Dark Horse,’ He's Been Trying Since 1932

By TOM MENKEL Times Staff Writer

KENTLAND, Oct. 28.—Indiana’s newly crowned cornhusking king today was Vilas Jacks, 40-year-old tenant farmer of Rensselaer in Jas-

per County, who slashed his way to a surprise win yesterday over one of the most formidable fields of contenders ever to vie for the title. A near-record of about 65,000 on the Mike Murphy farm near here witnessed Mr. Jacks’ victory. It climaxed an ambition of eight years’ standing, for he has been an unsuccessful contender for the coveted crown since 1932. Married and the father of two children, his triumph was doubly sweet. He won as a dark horse never mentioned in pre-contest predictions, and most of the field, with the exception of one older contestant, was composed of his juniors. His victory also was achieved over corn which was described by David

Thompson, contest manager, as the

most difficult to husk he had seen

.in a long time.

Puetz Is Runnerup

His closest competitor, Edward Puetz of Benton County, who took

‘the runnerup position, was 21. Mr.

Puetz was one of the most heavily backed favorites. The new champion’s winning total 24.41 bushels, as compared with the runnerup’s total of 24.12, was

: one of the lowest winning scores

: ever recorded.

It was not -only far below the

" State record, which many authori-

ties had predicted would be broken, but it was more than 10 bushels below the best mark of 34.76 posted ' by Mr. Jacks in a previous contest. It was more than 15 bushels below the mark of 40.83 bushels chalked up by Mr. Puetz in winning the Benton County championship this fall. It also was more than seven bu-

. by any of the 16 candidates in win- ' ning their respective county titles. The cause of this low figure, ac-

cording to Mr. Thompson and field judges, was not the lack of ability of the contestants, but rather the parched condition of the corn, This caused the husks to adhere to the ears as if they had been glued, Mr. Thompson said, which produced a “dirtier than normal” load of corn in every husker’s wagon, thus causing abnormal deductions from each husker’s total. An additional factor causing the low scores, he explained, was that a standard of 70 pounds to the bushel was used in judging the loads, when the standard should have been 63 pounds. The 70-pound standard was used, he said, after testing the corn for moisture, but he felt that the low scores indicated that a mistake had been made in the tests or else the corn had dried out faster than had been anticipated.

Toughest They've Tried

To a man, the huskers who were interviewed said it was. the toughest corn they ever had tackled, and that it “was worth your life” to strip the ears clean of husks.

ers were satisfied that it was a real contest, and the most satisfied of all of them was Vilas Jacks, who will compete next month in the national contest in South Dakota. Armed with a check for $100 and the title, the new champion smiled when asked if he thought he had a chance in the blue-ribbon classic. “I'd rather not.predict,” he said. “It might be a bad sign. But I'll do the best I can.” As for the crowd, only the old hands seemed shocked at the totals posted on the big scoreboard in front of the weighing-in enclosure, but they knew the reason. The rest cheered the new king as lustily as though he had broken both the State and national records. It ‘had been a good day and a good show. Total scores of each contestant yesterday follows in bushels: Vilas Jacks, Jasper County, 24.41; Edmund Puetz, Benton County, 24.12; Leslie Taylor, Newton Coun-
