Movie Makers Will Unfold New Camera Magic
By JAMES THRASHER This has been the year of the big wind, on the West Coast as well as the East. For Hollywood, in the interests .of motion pictures’ greatest year, have whipped up the great-
est blows in cinema history. The first you have seen already— the’ Goldwyn “Hurricane,” in which the studio wind machines picked a South Sea island as bare. as a chicken bone, — The second one— “Suez”’—is- Soming to the Indiana tomorrow. It’s the black simoon of the Sahara, which roars along in a black, funnel-shaped cloud like our American cyclones. The “Suez” producers guarantee that the black cone will be seen in all its towering terror. But movie makers no more will tell you how the trick is done than they'll tell you what tricks the camera played in “Topper,” while the invisible actors went in for pugilism and practical jokes. Everyone knows: there is such a thing as trick photography. But the studios operate on the theory that the customer is happier when
he doesn't know what makes the: wheels go round. So they guard.
their camera magic as though they had found the alchemists’ formula for synthetic gold. . Other production items, however, are divulged cheerfully by 20th Cen-tury-Fox, For instance, they're glad to have you know that they went to great pains to check up on the rules of court tennis. It’s played at the film’s opening by Tyrone Power and Joseph Schildkraut. It's reported to be a combination of handball and modern tennis, dating back to the Middle Ages, and a tough game in any era. It is said that Messrs. Power and Schildkraut spent more time perfecting their court tennis technique than they did in learning their lines. As in the case of most historical pictures, the studio spent months in preliminary research. The average picture-goer wouldn't care, but audiences are bound to include some expert or hobby rider who wculd snap gleefully at any inaccuracy. Sets and costumes of Louis Napoleon’s court were made from contemporary sketches and photographs. The Suez Canal dredges were built from plans of the originals, What's more, they worked. And, sure enough, they remembered to put a curl on Benjamin Disraeli’s forehead.
