COUNTY UNIT OF RED CROSS ENDS BUSY 12 MONTHS
Demand for Services Found Inereasing; 12 Directors Are Re-elected.
The American Red Cross has been more active in Marion County during the past year than in any orevious peace-time year, William For-
tune, chairman of the Indianapolis].
chapter, said yesterday at the organization’s annual membership meeting. Mr. Fortune said that the demand for Red Cross services in first aid, accident prevention and life saving is increasing constantly, and that liberal financial support is needed.
Twelve directors were re-elected for
three years as follows: Mr. Fortune, Robert H. Bryson, Mrs. J. A. Goodman, Edward A. Kahn, Wallace O. Lee, E. H. K. McComb, Felix M. McWhirter, Mrs. Gavin L. Payne, ‘Charles B. Sommers, James A. Stuart, Mrs. H. Nathan Swaim and Mrs. Herbert T. Wagner.
Summarizes Activities
Miss Agnes Cruse, chapter secretary, presented a summary of all Red Cross activities since October, 1937. Her report showed that Indiana contributed approximately one million dollars to the disaster relief fund following the Ohio River flood and that $4,753,727.10 had been expended by the national organization in relief to Indiana families in the flood area. The teaching of Red Cross first aid and life saving was extended during the summer months at municipal and private pools. A total of 350 persons completed junior and senior courses and 425 finished the beginner’s course, Miss Cruse said. At present the chapter is providing first aid training for approximately 900 students at Shortridge High School. The Home Service branch gave assistance to 780 families of veterans last year, while 3274 women participated in the work of the volunteer service.

EXPERT TRACES RELICS’ STYLES
People’s Desires Changing, Artisan Reports; Exhibit Set.
‘Fifteen minutes of conversation with Charles S. Monroe, Zionsville, who builds replicas of antiques in metals and wood, developed the following things that seem a good deal like straws in the wind: People who like to have old-fash-ioned post lamps at their homes now are wanting them with oil lamps in them and not electric bulbs. People will begin soon actually putting coals into bed warmers and ironing between the sheets to make the bed warm for a guest, just as they did years ago. Nothing very good has been developed for warming a bed since then. People who build new houses in old periods very often make the mistake of putting new antique |replica lamps of a different period land thus ruining the whole setup. The andiron is so named because it -ysed to be the spit dog and iron, and when they started not having spit dogs they just called them andirons.

him an old-fashioned weight-turned spit which now is in use at the Conner Perry Farm. Some of the first spits were turned |by dogs in a cage like a squirrel cage, with the dog walking always hopefully in the direction of the turning meat and no one seems to know why they gave this up. Mr. Monroe will display some of his creations at the American Art Week exhibit, Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, at the William H. Block Co. auditorium, sponsored by the Indiana Federation of Art Clubs, whose convention will be Nov. 3. :

BRINGS PROTEST
Hoosier in ‘Washington Is Critical of G. 0. P. Committeemen.
Times Special WASHINGTON, Oct. 27.—More than 50 absent voter ballots, sent to Indiana by Federal employees here, have been challenged by Rep:iblican precinct committeemen, - {8 was charged today by William E. O'Neil, a Hoosier Navy Yard employee. His ballot returned from his home town of Terre Haute, Mr. O'Neil made a checkup and found that similar action had been taken against employees in various governmental units here, he said. Among the cities from which ballots were returned because of challenges he listed Terre Haute, Craw-
fordsville, Logansport, Bloomington and Lafayette. In each case the challenge had been made by a Republican precinct committeeman on the grounds that the voter was unqualified because of lack of residence in the precinct, Mr. O'Neil declared. “1 called up G. O. P. headquarters here and asked them what about voting by absentee ballot in Indiana,” he said. “They told me that under the Indiana law anyone who is properly registered can use an absentee ballot and their physical presence is not required. “So I told them that I'had filed a residential qualification when I had registered in person at Terre Haute and they said I certainly am entitled to vote there. Whereupon I told them to wire out and call off their precinct committeemen dictators.” : ; Mr, O'Neil, a civil service employee, is a Democrat. Members of the Thomas R. Marshall Club of Washington are aiding absent voters from Indiana at a Democratic headquarters established downtown here.
