‘Low-Priced Motors Active; Profit-Taking Scales Market Gains.
- NEW YORK, Oct. 26 (U. P).— Aircraft and low-priced motor shares gained fractionally on the Stock Exchange today but other seclions of the list turned definitely lower in quieter trade. Approximately 175.000 shares of Packard Motors were turned over in the issue in the first two hours of trading. It opened at 5%, up %, and rose to 53% before profit-taking brought a moderate recession. Other low-priced motor shares also were active on fractional gains. The highpriced leaders, however, were weak. Chrysler sold off 2 points to 82 and showed little rallying power, while General Motors lost almost a point to near 51. Douglas Aircraft rose 1% points to a new high at 687% to.lead the aviation issues higher. Mid-day profit-taking scaled gains in the group. Steel shares weakened after early resistance to selling. U. S. Steel and Bethlehem drifted off. to losses of slightly more than a point each and others were down fractionally. - Johns Manville broke 4 points in the building section, but Minneapolis Honeywell rose 3 points. Rails and utilities had losses ranging to almost a point in the leaders. U. S. Government bonds rose into new high ground for the year in early dealings, but domestic corporate and foreign loans fluctuated irregularly. Gains in U. S. Government obli-
gations ranged to 4-32 point in quiet Am
trade. Nickel Plate issues were weak in a narrowly mixed rail group. The carrier's 6s of 1938lest 2 points after yesterday's advance to a new 1938
peak. Utilities and industrials were 4
little changed.
Curb stocks advanced fractions to|3"¢ Line
a point in early dealings. Several issues made new highs for the year. Aggressive strength in aviation shares featured early trading. Bell Air Fairchild Aviation and Lockheed Air all made new peaks for the year on gains ranging to a point. Other industrials were irregular. x Utilties were mixed. Mining shares were firm and oils neglected. = = 2
